When your out with your buddies or people you don't know, do you putt out every time you putt?

If you are getting a gimme from one in your group, or just taking one yourself, what constitutes a reasonable distance to you? Do you feel your score is valid if you are taking or getting gimmes during the round? Lets say you shoot an even Par 72 and your not putting out, do you feel the round was 100% legit even though the ball did not hit the bottom of the cup on every hole?

It is a good question because it is amazing how many times in a tournament I have seen good players miss 18" putts.

Unless I am playing Match Play I putt everything out but because of that I do not post those scores.

I agree with armygrunt47, being one of those myself, I believe in the honest score, putt it in the hole, then post it.

You should always putt out unless you're in match play. If you don't, you're one of the following:

A) You're lazy
B) Your scores are inflated
C) You don't respect the game

I putt everything out even if some says its a gimme. If someone rolls my ball at me and says "thats good", I put it back as close to the spot it was at and putt it out. I want actual score. I have missed 12 inch putts before. Most guys I golf with know I don't want gimme's, mulligans or anything else like that.

If you see someone who is better at using the back of their putter to scoop up their ball than they are at putting, they don't normally putt out. I want to hear the ka-plunk of the ball hitting bottom.

I putt everything out if I am playing in an event or something like that. Even if someone tells me that is good I still putt it out. I have missed what many would consider "tap ins" due to lack on concentration. If I am just out messing around with a buddy then I'll pick up "within the leather".

Usually putt out. I do not change the manner in which I play for any reason or group. If I should be so lucky as to have a putt within two inches, I most likely will pick up.

I putt out--always with the occasional exception in match play, but even then I've been known to decline the offer. I think if you do so it will make you a better putter.

I keep a handicap, so I play by the rules as far as possible. I always putt out. If someone knocks a 4 incher back to me, I don't freak out on them. But everyone I normally play with know better, so it only happens with strangers mostly.

If it is a gimme then, you shouldn't have trouble finishing it in the cup ?
Why take a gimme, unless you have doubt ?

Like one of my friend said, one could have putted out with the time wasted arguing if it's a gimme distance or not.

I will putt out unless it is given to me by the person I am playing against. I will sometime give longer putts earlier and then change it up later to get in their head. Also if I give them the putt and they miss while trying to brush it in I will mention not to do that again. (getting in their head) Then when the match is on and they need to make the 3 footer to win a hole definately no gimmies then. I will normally not give anything over a foot.

You bet, it is that plunk sound that finalizes a hole, good or bad.

One exception
The MGA at Etowah Valley plays using points. No points for a double or worse. They frown upon me when I want to putt out when a single bogey is no longer an option.

I'm one of "those" people. I have no good defense to be perfectly honest., and my score might be inflated by a stroke every few rounds. I'll accept the shame.

Why do I do it? Social reasons primarily. I typically play with different random people, and I'd say the prevailing attitude here is to spot each other the easiest putts. Perhaps it's a way of being friendly as we all take up this difficult game of golf. Kind of a bonding thing somehow. Some rounds there are no gimmies given.

In the back of my mind, I've always thought that once I shift to the blue tees that I'll tighten that up. I am still a mid80s white tee guy on municipal courses who doesn't compete for anything (and I won't compete until I can shoot sub80 from blues).

Ok, pile on. I can take it. Maybe you'll convince me to take my game up a notch.

OK, in addition to the original question...

How many of us miss a putt and give that short little 1 foot putt with the back of the putter and miss that one too? My hand is raised...very high!
