Had a situation come up a couple weeks ago on the course. Haven't dug into the rules book, but figured I'd get better answers here than trying to interpret what the book says.
I can make excuses all I want (swirling winds, mostly) but regardless, I launched a 7 iron over the green on a par 3. behind this green is a embankment which leads down into a bunker. Immediately behind the bunker it drops off 4 feet into a swamp/marsh/water hazard. I could see the spot where the ball impacted the bunker, then bounced about a foot into the hazard. Where do I drop? In the bunker? On the embankment? Do I have to re-tee it? |

If it's marked with yellow stakes, drop on the other side of the hazard if possible on a line from the flag thru the point the ball crossed the hazard or play from the spot of the original stroke. In this case, re-tee from the tee box.
If red stakes, all the above applies or you may drop within two club lengths of the point of entry, either way not closer to the hole. |

C'mon, dude. Get with the new rules of golf. In these instances, just call yourself "Tiger" and do whatever you want. Such obscure seat-of-the-pants rules nitpicking is an anachronism. You are not actually expected to know such things.

Repeat after me "Just put me down for an 8"
And then head to the next tee box. |

What Otter said is correct. He forgot to mention the one shot penalty, I think. Don't put down an 8 either, you can still bogey that hole. I am ignoring the Tiger comment because I am tired of all that. :-)

I am ignoring the Tiger comment because I am tired of all that. :-) 1 tee shot 2 penalty 3 chip shot, short because club caught on poana grass clump, in bunker 4 blast out of bunker over green into front bunker 5 blast out of front bunker onto green 6 lag putt 7 3 footer lips out 8 finally into cup. Bogey is possible for me, but not likely......yet. My real response would be to say "I can get up and down from there" Even if it's a lie, I have to believe it could happen! |

Otterman did good. But if it is a red staked hazard that drop might get real tricky given your description of the hole.

If he asked about the penalty, I'd have included that in the answer. |
