Are new golfers out there going to extremes to be like the PGA Touring Pro's or....?

I went out today as a single to the TPC of Scottsdale Stadium Course for what I wanted, and thought would be a great choice for the day. NOT!

I get to the first tee box and meet the two others in the group. A young gentleman and his girlfriend, along with the guy I was riding with that was a 15 handicap. Off the first box the young guy hits into the desert, his girlfriend into the bushes just in front of the tee box. Oh boy I thought. Get out to the shots hit and more duffed shot after shot and not to mention they can't find their balls they have hit. Mind you, this continues on through the entire round. A round of hell and back. The golf etiquette? LMAO. If they had a ball 3 feet from the pin and marked? They would stand right behind the ball and surround the pin while you where trying to putt. It was unbelievable to deal with this on a TPC Course if at all. NOW, the kicker....The young guy...Brand new $350 Titleist Staff bag with HIS NAME engraved on the bag like a tour player, $1000+ Titleist MB712 blade irons with ProjectX shafts, Titleist 910 driver with Graphite Design Tour AD Quattrotech 55 "R2" Shaft ($380 for shaft), and then hitting PRO V1x balls. This guy couldn't hit the ball!!!!! He made Sergio look bad on standing over the ball. Hit the ball douche bag!

If it wasn't for the big heart I have with people as I have gotten older, I would have absolutely yelled at them for just attempting to play this type of course and ruin it for others paying top dollar. What an absolute bummer on a Sunday morning to get to a TPC course to be paired up with this crap.

How would you guys have handled this? I am still angry even though I played well for a 5 hour and 15 minute round and getting yelled at by the course marshall to speed it up when it has nothing to do with my play. FFFFF!

I've dealt with that crap before, and if I had the cojones I would do a Sabbatini and just play through without say anything. But I'm not one who likes to make a bad situation worse, so I put up with it.

I've dealt with that on public courses that are certainly difficult, but a Tour course like TPC Scottsdale? Holy mother of pearl. Go hit through the windmill and the clown's mouth for Pete's sake.

thats tough man, sometimes courses like that just attract rich dummies that don't give a crap. they are loaded and the cost of the stuff doesn't matter so they buy anything that they are told is the best. I'd chalk it up to the fact that you just got paired up with shitty people. It happens at muni's and unfortunately, it can happen at really nce courses too. If they are egregiously breaking etiquette you are well within your rights to politely explain to them some of the finer things about golf. We all were beginners at one point. I'm also an avid cyclist and the same thing happens, I see people on $5000 bikes that can't ride in a straight line, drives me nuts!

So that's where all those ProV1s littered around the course come from?

I feel for you Jerry. Tough on you, especially when it is for 5.5 hours.

As far as the young couple. More than not they are of one of two categories.

1. They are beginners and don't know any better. No one has taken them under their wing and guided them along the way. For these type of beginners they are at high risk of losing interest in the game. Unless someone comes along side them, they are probably going to be frustrated at both their play and other golfers. Not everyone is going to be as gracious as you.

2. They are self-centered and spoiled. They could not care less about you or anyone else on the course. IMO we don't need people like that in our game. If anything they need us. They need to learn the great character-building lessons this game has to offer. But in order for that to happen, the little light bulb in their head needs to show some signs of life.

My guess is after playing with them for 18 holes, you know to which category they belong. If it were me, I'd have a conversation with someone of authority at the Pro Shop. Armed with this information they are in a better position to do something about it if either or these two return. They also might give you some consideration for handling the situation with the grace you did and taking the time to report back to them so that they can handle things better the next time around.

Dude! So sorry for your frustration. I can sympathize. Did they even offer to buy you a beer after the round? They really don't realize what a pathetic spectical they present. And that course sure isn't cheap either. Bummer.

Sometimes I show up at a golf course with no starting time, because they won't give you a time for the most part as a single. But I won't just play with whomever they want to pair me with anymore. I tell them I want a 10 handicap or better. If I don't get that I just practice, putt, then leave.

No beer, no drinks from them. As we got farther into the round, I just could not believe what I was seeing in his golf bag. Didn't pay too much attention to it as I was trying to watch what weed they were hitting there tee shots into to speed up the round. He was out like he was sponsored by Titleist. Blades and the guy couldn't hit the ball to save his life. It was unreal. What was crazy is he said he just picked up a brand new dozen Pro V1x's at $50+ and by the time we got to hole 14, he was hitting his chicks Pink balls. Amazing. Quick $50. I even took a moment to help the gal as she was trying to hit the ball off the box on par 3's with no tee. She tops another shot into the desert in front of her. I got a little frustrated and said "now wait a minute, where is your tee? The Pro's hit off a tee, and recommend it. Take advantage of it." He says, "since when does a Pro tee up on a Par 3, never heard that before". I was about to pop but kept my cool. Her next shot was nicely struck. Ugh. Oh I could go on and on. I politely told them on hole 15, "that normally, they charge $300 on this course to keep the less skilled players off the course, so they can get it ready for the Waste Management Open. They don't want their course getting abused. And that goes for many others." Then went on to tell them nicely at the end that they should seriously consider other courses to learn on so they don't get frustrated and quit the game. I know others not so polite. Back in the day I would have said my say and went back to club house and started over after a few complaints. A day I actually will never forget on the course. Crazy.

I didn't play with him but today I saw the guys cousin at my home course. The guy was decked out with Cobra gear and apperal. The one hole that I saw him play was a 160 yd par 3. Took him 4 shots to reach the green before chipping back and forth accross the green 2 times. Have no idea how many putts he had but I am sure that it was 3 or more.

Hahahahaha that is funny. Yes he did. AND she played from the Whites instead of the reds for ladies. I could have seriously out drove him with my putter. I can tee my putter up and hit it about 140. It even goes so far as to they kept asking me to point out the area Tiger got the guys to move the rock. Ask me where the guy threw an orange at him and I might have answered. Just golf buddy!

Oh my god. It went from bad to worse just now. I really don't care if golf is losing players if it's idiots like these that don't have the common sense to play a round of golf. First thing I'm teaching my kids when they want to learn how to play golf is how to act appropriately and properly respect the game and its players.

dont take this the wrong way. $50 is not a lot of money to me. I understand your frustration but again, as somoene who lives in NYC I'm constantly surrounded by "the 1%". many people don't care about the money, the reality is that it sounds like they were having a good time. If they spend all that money and have a grand old time well guess what, the pro shop doesn't give a shit because they will come back. unfortunately, being rich doesn't give them the right to ruin others time. I put this one somewhat on you for not stepping up sooner and trying to educate them. After that, if they continued on, you should have put a call in to the pro shop to send the ranger out to observe it as if they were as bad and playing as slow as you say they were probably ruining the day for people playing behind you as well

$50 isn't alot. But to lose a dozen in 14 holes at $50 is a bit ridiculous but to each his own. CP I did think about it getting the marshall to split us up. We got bitched at to speed the pace up and that got my blood boiling. You want to help others out on the course. Just not on a TPC Course. You kinda expect quality golfers to show up. I can say it was a first in a while. Not a common occurance in Scottsdale, AZ. It normally happens when I go to San Diego for a weekend. That place is bad. I have seen courses allow 6somes. No joke either. If there is a next time, I will be going back to the clubhouse to tee it up on the next opening.

I don't know or would not know where to start. If there was a way to break from this couple and you and your other partner go on ahead, maybe that would have worked. Minor etiquette suggestions might have been ok. Cracks me up about all of his equipment - again, where do you start but let's go with he should not be hitting Pro V1 $4.00 golf balls, nor should he be hitting blades.

Better luck next time man. Glad you played well despite all of this.

$50 is a lot to me. I'm 50+ now and I see kids all the time getting every thing NEW... When I was starting out every thing I had or got was used. No kids have cash now, it's all on their card. 90% of anything I buy is cash only, My kids do the same thing has to be new and on the card. I want a blood test done, lol.
