So, for the last few years I have been playing to a 19 handicap. Typically shooting high 80's to mid 90's. My good friend has always told me I needed a lesson, so FINALLY I took a series of three lessons from my local professional. What a difference it has made in my game. I was coming over the top and didn't know how to correct this typical swing fault. Now, I hit the ball straighter and farther.
But, the other truly remarkable aspect of my game is the stretching my pro has encouraged me to do before I hit the course. I take about 10 to 15 minutes to fully stretch my back, arms, legs and neck. Nothing too aggressive, but a full rotation of stretching and relaxation before I even pick up a club. I have less pain and seem to have more focus on the course. I hope that this will help any of you who are not kids anymore and help you to play better now than when you were a kid in your twenties.

I'm of the over 50 crowd and I take time to stretch before each round. Nothing fancy ... just a couple of things to loosen up the old muscles and bones.

Most of the time I play in the after noon when I get done at work so other then just hitting a few range ball to loosen up I don't do much more then that. If I play in the morning then I will take longer to loosen up do some things for the back, legs, shoulders, arms and hit 2 times as many balls as I do for a after noon round. us over 50 boys need to take our time to get ready.

I don't do anything Olympian, but I certainly make sure my muscles are loose and free before I hit my first tee shot. I only take 2 minutes (being 16 helps) but I should probably double that at least.

Last year my wife and I went to a golf school in Austin, Texas. Within the first 15 minutes, I made a swing that somehow pulled a muscle in my forearm. The attached picture is the result. The school recommended that I always stretch before I play and I went through their stretching exercises but I guess I should have been stretching more. I now spend at least 5 to 10 minutes stretching before I play or hit balls. It has made a difference. Now I feel like I am ready to play when I step on that first tee. I had to lay off golf for three weeks and I think and that was worse than the injury.

I have had numerous back injuries I kinda believe they have all come from not stretching before an activity (hunting or golfing). These days I stretch before hand so I can WALK the next day........

Great post ... and a great reminder.

I definitely feel better standing over the ball on the No. 1 box when I've warmed up AND stretched properly. A lot of times I forget to fully stretch out for no reason other than I just do.

Not anymore ...

Great post Geno!

I'd encourage taking it one step further. Get in shape. Most of what we think is the result of age is more the result of inactivity or the wrong kind of activity (if you know what I mean).

I read a couple of years ago on this subject and discovered that Peter Jacobson stretches his hamstrings (if nothing else) every single day. The reason, especially to the afore mentioned 50+ crowd, is that the hamstrings directly connect the glutes and the lower back all the way through the upper traps.
I didn't immediately jump on the band wagon until one round where I got out of the truck and went straight to the first tee to swing away. My hamstrings and back were really sore the next day, to the point where I couldn't swing a driver.
My first thought was, "this is a major cause of golfing back pain." I have had stretching in my game plan ever since.

The wife and I have been stretching before each round and we generally walk. It takes real commitment in the heat we have been having here in St. Louis. But it's worth it. We feel better and have more energy throughout our day. And we stretch even on days we are not playing. Just good practice in our 50's. G.

Apparently he also regularly stretches his funny bone. One of the funniest guys on tour.

Yes he is! He actually has a knack for that type of sports comedy. It's kinda corny on something like UTube, but it's nothing short of awesome if it's like other live events that I've attended.
