It is fair to say we all have Strength and weaknesses in our Golf game.

Some obviously gives us confidence and great results and some we do knowing that part of our game needs work.

Name your strength to your weakness in your current golf game and a brief description of each.

#1- Putting (Solid as ever. Love this part of my game. Fast greens my favorite)
#2- Iron play (Very satisfied)
#3 - Driver (Was #1 until I changed drivers recently. It is coming back strong. Any hole 365 or less I tend to like to tee up with 3w for position.)
#4 - Sand play (Confident enough to hit it in greenside bunker if necessary)
#5 - Wedge play (60 yards or closer )(inconsistent but this part of my game has been progressively getting better. Distance control is the issue. Have many different shots around the green. Just need to keep plugging away.

#3 90-165 yards. Getting better
#4 driver. streaky but its been on lately
#5 full wedges. starting to feel more comfortable hitting them
#6 putting. IF ONLY i could get my putting straight.

Scale of 1-10 with 10 being best:

Driving 8-9
Fairway Metal 6-7
Long Irons 4-5
Mid Irons 5-6
Short Irons 7-8
Wedges 7-8
Putter 8-9
Overall thru this year I'm happy with my driving and short game. My mid irons and short occasionally is what I've been struggling with. A case of the pull lefts. Biggest improvement has probably been my putting, but there's times where I still feel hit or mis when I show up.

Driver usually in fairway and long.
Fairway metals good.
Short irons great.
long irons inconsistent.
greenside, chips and sand play, needs more work.
putting very inconsistent. making too many changes looking for instant results.
mental game, the worst. Bad decisions every round. taking too many chances playing low percentage shots.
I have hit 16 greens before, but had 7 3putts and shot 84. Bad choices ruin my game.

#1- Short game. The facet that keeps my scores as low as they are. I feel like I can get up/down from anywhere where's there grass, it's just a matter of if I make the putt.

#2- Irons. I've never really realized how good my iron games is until just recently since I've gained distance and can use my irons more now. I'll hit a few that downright suck now and then, but my short irons especially are pretty sharp.

#3a- Driving. Accuracy, YAY! Distance, eh. If I could hit my driver 260 yards, combined with my accuracy, I firmly believe my handicap would be no higher then 3.

#3b- Putting. If I can putt well it's beautiful. If I putt like crap it's extremely disturbing. I can putt the same course in 24 putts or 35 putts in consecutive days.

#5- Sand play. In a word, atrocious. I actually do better from fairway bunkers than greenside bunkers which is the minority of sand play. I'm learning how to get better from bunkers around the green and it will come, but it can kill me at times.

Putting. Yep, I can putt. Good thing.

Short game. Getting up and down is my game.

Scrambling. Getting out of trouble is gift.

Course management. Keep your head down and your emotions in check.

Tee shots. Got to hit the fairway to score.

Short irons. Hit the green and play to my strengths!

1. irons 5i-9i very good
2. wedges when I'm playing consistently, it's like throwing darts at the green
3. hybrids
4. putting usually good distance control, but should make more
5. sand play, good nothing spectacular but it gets the job done, more save would be good.
6. driver... i have great distance 260-280 hitting the fairway is the problem. This year has been better but still hit less than 50%.

#1 short game. I always have been able to pitch, chip, be creative around the greens and it saves me alot.
#2 My golf savvy. I know how to play the game. It probably come from not being very long as a junior. I had to learn how to complete
#3 90-165 yards. I am pretty good with my 6 iron down.
#4 driver. I am still long enough and I hit it with a lot of confidence.
#5 Long irons. I'm pretty accurate from 170-210 .
#6 putting. It was the strength of my game until I reached 45. But I am improving.

Jerry, great topic. I think there are at least two worthy discussions springing up from your post. 1) A ranking of personal strengths to weakness using the criteria you provided. 2) A discussion of what are the 5-6 major elements of a golfer's game that MOST determine a golfer's ability to score.

We're seeing a lot of posters create their own list and think it would be great to discuss this. Frankly, I don't think at the end we have to agree on a list. In part I think the answer IS and SHOULD be different for players of different handicaps, time playing the game, age and athletic ability.

So here's my answer using the elements Jerry included in his topic post. As we all are doing, this is on a personal curve.

#1- Putting (I'm AVERAGING 28 putts per round and putting better than ever and better than anyone I've played with in ages.)
#2- Sand play (I'm about 50/50 getting up and down from a green side bunker. Pretty consistent at picking it clean from a fairway bunker.)
#3- Wedge play (60 yards or closer ) (Most would be VERY happy with a wedge game like mine. But I am acutely aware that the percentage of the time you get the ball inside of 5-6 feet with a wedge is HUGE.)
#4- Driver (I've added distance, but never been a long hitter. Avg. about 250 yards and 60-70% fairways hit. Good enough to score, but at age 55 never going to be a consistent 300 yard driver. Accuracy is where I could still improve.)
#5- Iron play (Can consistently put it on the green, but need to do better on where I leave it and proximity to the cup. Need to give myself more birdie chances.)

First comment on the different criteria I see people using.

Some of you are listing the different clubs in your bag. Presumably your ranking is primarily how well you strike each of these clubs. I believe a list like this is totally appropriate for a new golfer or a high handicapper. Until you can consistently and solidly strike the ball most of the other criteria others might list really doesn't matter.

Once you've progressed to where you can consistently and solidly strike the ball other criteria become important like course management, sand play, and a more sophisticated short game.

A. Off the tee box and iron play is my strongest.

B. My putting was my weakest but now is fairly strong cause I have been working on it.

Z. My chipping and sand play used to be strong but I quit working on it and now it is killing me. I lose atleast 5 strokes a round from duffed chips or horrible sand shots that either get blasted across the green or chunked 2 ft. back into the bunker. (this is also what gets my blood pressure sky high) Can't stand a duffed/chunked shot. It's a wasted stroke to me.

If I can keep Z from happening I break 80 regularly. Z is my X-factor.

#1 short game 100 yard and under
#2 160 and under
#3 putting
#4 driver
#5 woods

If only I can stay in the fairway teeing off, guarantee me a PAR every time.

Are you a sweeper? I'm guessing you're a sweeper. And maybe I'm dead wrong, but if you are, it could be why you struggle with the greenside bunker stuff. Or I could be an idiot for asking. :)

My strengths are everything but iron play on good days.

My weaknesses are irons always and everything else on bad days.

And after the 33/38 (!!!!38!!!!) putting performance this past weekend, it's time again to return putting to a strength. That was so incredibly weak.

OK, I'll play
Like Co Golfer if I'm anywhere near the green I can get up and down 70% of the time but feel mentally it's 100% of the time, so short game is good.
Putting is "Mr. automatic"
long iron game needs work as accuracy isn't as good as it should be, hence my only hitting 5-8 greens.
Driver determines if I'm in the 70's or 80's! My confidence level is as good as flipping a coin. Therefore, many times if the Driver isn't working a particular day I'll use 3W and give up yardage for position and play for up and down par. Birdie chances go way down with this strategy
