What if Tiger WD due to being "tired"?

What if Tiger shot say a 79 and then withdrew from the tournament because he was tired, how well would that be received? Remember when people said he was faking injury to get out of a tournament and it was a huge deal? Phil admits he is dropping out and it receives some coverage, but it has basically blow over like nothing happened. Probably because Phil is such a good guy, right?

I have no problem with the move actually, but I just think it shows how ridiculous people are that if Tiger would have done this everyone would have crucified him for it.

BTW, part of the reason I wrote this is because I didn't see any other comments about it on here. If Tiger did something like this there is no doubt it would be one of the first blog posts on my stracka profile page.

I was wondering about it myself. Everyone knows I love Phil, and I'm incredibly in between on what happened. It's no secret the US Open is on his mind, as it is with a majority of players in The Memorial, and along with the fact he's tired that's supposed to mean he gets to go home a day early? Kinda bothers me a little. If he wins at Olympic in 2 weeks, it will go down as a brilliant move to WD this week. He gets to see the course a bit earlier, and maybe it will make enough of a difference.

Had Tiger done this, lord knows what would have gone down. If people (me being included in people) criticized him for quitting after 65 holes at Doral, quitting after 18 at Muirfield Village would have sent the golfing media and public forums to hell.

Phil is tired from playing let last 3 weeks and taking his wife to Europe for her birthday. Tiger gets tired from not playing for 3 weeks and fornicating with everyone but his wife in Europe.

There will always be haters everywhere. Can't stop them. But the media fuels the haters.. I never cared much for the media. I have worked closely with them on occasion, and have found them to be too willing to jump the gun just for a story, and usually get the facts wrong or at least mixed up. If Tiger were to leave early, it would be his business as to why. Nobody elses. Sometimes there are personal reasons that nobody else needs to know. Period. But the media will poke and prod, and if they aren't pacified, they will throw speculation out there that is never flattering for the person affected.

If Tiger WD-ed after a 79 because he felt tired, there'd be four threads on this site about it and in at least one of those threads, the crying, whining, cussing and name-calling would go on and on and on until it reached 50-plus posts.

Because it's fat Phil, nobody says a thing.

Not only that, Rory's busy missing another cut. Less than a year ago, everybody in here was already counting his multiple majors to the tune that Jack's 18 seemed in danger, and now he can't even make a cut.

Because it's Rory McDonald, nobody says a thing.

Feel sorry for all the fans that went there to see him play. What a poor excuse, way to go Phil. Your true colors are starting to come out now.
Maybe I'll try that line on my boss today "I worked hard all week, I'm really tired now, can I go home?"

LMAO...SO TRUE! if you or I, did that we be so FIRED!..Phil,said it was MORE Important for him to be rested for the U.S. OPEN in two weeks than to Finish Jack Nicklaus Tournament..What a Slap to Jacks Face!!!

McIlroy 3 missed cuts in a row. Phil withdraws from fatigue. If it was Tiger on either one of these it would be media bashing. Phil and McIlroy will skate by because Tiger is in the lead.

I like the 3 missed cuts by McIlroy though. ;>)

There are some interesting dynamics to this one:

o With a 79 on day 1 and admittedly NOT hitting the ball well, it would seem that what the sponsors and fans were cheated out of was seeing Phil struggle one more day, then gone for the weekend.

o From a player's sponsor, PGA and media perspective, which do you think they'd rather see, Phil struggle one more day or go home get his rest and straighten things out with his swing coach to get ready for the U.S. Open?

o Being worn out by playing multiple tournaments in a row is one thing. Being worn out from too much vacationing is another.

One thing to remember too is that this was only Phil's 3rd ever WD, and he's been playing on the PGA Tour for around 20 years.

The sponsors don't care one whit about how well Phil's playing. All they want is him teeing it up. The crowds would follow him if he shot 95.

The year Colonial plastered his face all over the Metroplex and he didn't show up, Colonial organizers would've taken 82-82-cut and been a whole lot happier than the no show they got.

As for the vacationing, I've never heard of that one leading to somebody WD-ing. Surely golfers have gotten so big time that they've spent much of their time globe-trotting and not golfing. Greg Norman comes to mind as one of the biggest culprits ... at least among guys who haven't won 14 majors when they weren't vacationing/globe-trotting.

"If Tiger did something like this"?

You obviously have either a short, faulty, or selective memory. Back in '97, Eldrick withdrew from the Greater Milwaukee Open on the Monday prior to the event, saying he was "tired" and needed a break. This did not go over very well with Tournament officials, who had given Eldrick a sponsor's exemption the year before when he turned pro after winning the 1996 US Amatuer. It prompted criticism from some very high places, including from Jack Nicklaus who said, "I can't ever remember being tired when I was 22 years old"!

BTW, the First Amendment really sucks, doesn't it? Why don't you write your congressmen and ask they petition their members to hold a constitutional convention to add a 28th Amendment to the Constitution prohibiting criticism of Eldrick?

Maybe it's because Phil and Rory aren't dickheads like Eldrick?

I give Phil a pass because of his physical ailments. He would of been cut anyhow.
