I have never got below a 10 handicap. Had a few rounds in the 70's and even one time I was under par for 9 holes. But it seems like there is always one or more parts of the game that is just off. right now it's my mid irons. 8,7,6. just not hitting them right. I can hit pw and 9 and 4,5 irons good. Played 18 yesterday after noon and shot an 86. 1st hole hit only and fair drive and was 195 out. hit my 5 wood and was 20feet over the flag. 2nd hole missed the green with 8 iron 3rd missed the green with a 7 iron. maybe I should get a 12 wood??? LOL

So Troy, we should get together. I'll help you if I can. We've been talking about it for a long time anyway. We're not THAT far away from each other.

I briefly got down to an 8.4 when I had run a lot of sub 80 rounds together a few years back but once they started dropping off my 20 game record my handicap went right back up. Typically I hover between 10 and 12 but it looks like I'm going to lose a few more good scores on the next revision and be in the mid 13's. I ain't gettin' any younger either!

I hear ya DH, 2 yrs ago I was at the top of my game. Got down to a 8 HC., 1st the driver left me then when I got it back my putting went South. Thought I figured it out then it was gone along with my 3 wood. 3 woods back but my putting stroke is terrible and I fear the dam putter. I have over 7 top brand name putters and ebay is fixen to get a new listing. lol
The game is so hard on my mind that I'm thinking of taking up basket weaving or something. Once a Great putter or better than average and now the stupidest putter in Texas. Like you say, ( something is always missing ).

Wish I could join you if you go see Mark, to me he is inspiring!

Hey Duck. You could try what do and just practice wedges, 6i and driver. For me, as long as I can control the yardage with my wedges then I am going to hit greens. As long as I can control my irons then I can get close to greens on par 3s and 5s then use my wedges to get up and down if needed. Then if I can atleast hit my driver relatively straight I can rely on my irons and wedges to get the ball close to the green. For putting the only thing that I work on is speed control. Everything else that has to do with putting is stuff that requires experiance from actually getting on the course. Reading breaks and and judging speed on up and down hill putts can only be learned from experience.

Part of the problem is your attitude. As long as you think something will always go wrong, it will. You need to practice and then believe in yourself. Practice chipping and putting mainly. Even bad mid-irons can be saved by a great short game. I shot a 78 last round. I hit 4 GIR, and took 26 putts. It was mostly my short game that saved me. Spend 75% of your practice on shots 125 yards and less. Find distances for 1/2, 3/4, full wedge shots. Know these yardages, play to these yardages.

No doubt, golf includes lots of different parts ... tee ball, long irons, mid-irons, short irons, wedges, short game, putting ... and you could break those down into more if you really wanted to. It's very hard to have all of those working at the same time if you work for a living, and even if you don't, it's *still* hard to get it all together at the same time.

Don't let it get you down. You should feel some comfort in the fact that that really is just golf. My suggestion would be to practice hard the things you don't do well and practice the stuff you do do well enough to maintain what you've got ... if that makes sense.

Also, spend more time practicing pitching, chipping and putting if you want to lower your handicap. The more I do that, the more my overall game seems to always improve -- even when I lay off for a couple of weeks. It's to the point now where I practice chipping about 2/3 of all my practice time just because I know how much it helps my scores.

I was watching the show where they talk to the players after they lose on Big Break and that girl was talking about hitting a weak right shot, something about her hands getting to far inside. That shot is my miss with the 8,7,6 irons right now. after seeing that show I think I know what she is talking about getting the hands away from my body just a little and hitting the ball with the back of my left hand.

Your right I don't think I am a good golfer. fair yes, not sure I ever will be good? as in under 10 handicap. My chipping game is the best part of my game most of the time.
