I am thinking about trying TaylorMade balls and wanted to see what people are saying about them. I was in the PGA store yesterday and saw a nice deal but decide to hold off. Any input on these balls? Also I noticed some of there balls are advertising different dimple patterns changing the performance or adding distance/loft. Are these improvements legal in a tournament setting? Any advise would be great.

The USGA publishes a list of conforming golf balls. If it's on the list it should be OK for tournament play. The list is a 44 page PDF file and finding what you are looking for can take a little poking around, but a little persistence usually pays off.

Which TM balls were you looking at. I have played the Penta (now the TP5) and they are very nice.

I have used just about every tour level ball on the market to some extent. I use to play the Pentas or ProV1x, depending on which i could get cheaper at the time, but since i tried the Callaway Hex Black Tour about 6 months ago and never looked back.

Penta TP5 is a very good ball, distance and feel wise. And I would also recommend you buy them from www.TGW.com You can order your own number on the ball.

You can drive yourself crazy looking for your go to ball. Penta's are very good but also very pricy. I believe Rocketbalz are being hyped. Why not try a three piece ball like the Top Flight Gamer V2. Twenty bucks a dozen and every now and then fifteen bucks on sale at Edwin Watts. After the crazy search through what seems hundreds of balls it comes down to good/very good = $$$.

I've been playing the Penta 5 piece ball and though it spins like crazy, I've lost about 10 yards and even more on my wedges. I previously played and was fitted by Bridgestone to the B330S. It's a great ball but doesn't spin as much. It all depends on what you're looking for, distance or control.

I was a Pro V user until i tried the Taylormade Penta. Still get the same spin and control around the green. But longer and straighter off the tee.

I have tried every Titleist ball except for the Velocity. My favorite is the NXT Tour. Its longer than the others and spins to a stop right at the ball mark. And only $24 per dozen.

And you can buy used (perfect condition) ones for $.50 each on the Internet. DUH! Like with golf clubs and club shafts, the difference is NOT the equipment or the ball. A good player can pick clubs out of the $5 used barrel and shoot scratch--with balls that have been at the bottom of the lake for months! Larry |

I've tried several new balls this year that I like and I think they have all been mentioned here. Bridgestone Fix, Titelist Velocity, Taylormade TP3, and Taylormade Burner. For now I've settled on the Burner. I get good distance with it (~300 Wednesday evening with a bird on the #1 handicap hole) and it plays well off the irons with respectable short game response. Currently on sale for 2 doz @ $35 makes for a good deal. At least they work for me!
