From ESPN.com:

Fifty-nine year old Wayne Mitchell from New Tripoli, PA, "owned -- for a few hours, at least -- one of the most famous golf balls in Masters history. He got it Sunday afternoon after Louis Oosthuizen double-eagled the par-5 2nd hole, pulled the Titleist from the cup and, incredibly, underhand-tossed it toward the patrons seated behind the green."

He eventually decided to return the ball to Augusta National officials, who "declined to divulge whatever arrangement was made for the ball."

I'm wondering what you would do if you came upon a historic sports item such as Shrek's double-eagle golf ball. Would you simply keep the ball? Put it on e-Bay? Or would you return it back to Oosthuizen or Augusta National officials? And if you returned the ball, what, if anything, would you demand in return for the ball?

I'd have tucked that thing in my pocket, watch the end of the round, get home, run to my computer, open an eBay account, let the bidding begin.

I would have put it in my shag bag and used it for another practice ball. lol

It was interesting to watch the fans around the man who caught the ball later. He was able to show it to others ... even letting them handle it. Much different than catching a historic baseball where a major scrum ensues. As for me, I would have offered to give it back to Louis first and then if he didn't want it, give it to the Masters officials. It's a part of golf history ... and it should be kept at the Masters.

I'm with ArizonaBlue, I think there are many things far more important than personal financial gain. I would want this ball and what it represents to be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

Put it in the Golf Hall of Fame or return it to his family.

BTW, just so you know I'm not blowing smoke. I have an item of historical significance given to me that I am currently trying to give back to the families involved or seek their input on where they would like it to go. The principles involved are no longer living, so I can't consult with them, and I'm trying to find some way to locate their families.

I return it to Augusta with a lifetime honorary membership so I can play there whenever I return to Ga.

The first thing I told my wife when he threw the ball was, it belongs in the clubhouse as part of Masters history, and I would offer it to the club if they let me, her, and two others play a round there, then give us a 10-minute shopping spree in the clubhouse.

How would you be able to confirm or verify that it was the actual double eagle ball. i bet you could go on ebay right now and you'd be able to find someone claiming to have the double eagle ball, even though everyone knows (at least that keeps up w/ golf stories) that the ball is in Augusta

Very true. The clubhouse is where the ball belongs, but I'd feel selfish enough to feel like I deserve something in return.

I think the smart move would be to buy two of them...

As for compensation, I'm not greedy. Guest member privileges for a day, including a round for a foursome would be quite sufficient!

I would also give it back to Augusta, but some of you are letting them off cheap. I would want a lifetime honorary Patrons ticket to the Masters. it would not cost Augusta anything to give you that but it would be something to treasure for a lifetime, just like the ball.

Great shot into the the 2nd hole, then the luck came into play. That ball I think should be in the Golf Hall of Fame. What was that dumbass thinking throwing the ball away??????????? Does he give away a hole in one ball too????????????
