Yo Stracka Peeps!

I will be getting fitted and purchasing new irons soon, so I have begun the process of researching irons that I should demo, based on my swing, handicap, etc. Recently on a trip to my local Golf Galaxy, the club fitter referred me to the 'Maltby Club Rating System.' In brief, it is a point system to grade all irons based on several elements, including moi, weight, balance, etc. The overall score, known as the Maltby Playability Factor, is the most important. The range can be anywhere between 0 - 1000+. The higher the score, supposedly the better the club. After visiting the website (www.ralphmaltby.com) to look at ratings of clubs I will be testing, I was really shocked to see some of the ratings.

Does anyone have any experience in using this system? How valid is it?

Can anyone comment on the fact that most of the 'major game improvement' irons had the highest scores, and even a few of the 'conventional irons' had really low scores. EX: TM TP-9 irons from last year, were below 100!

Looking forward to all of your comments on this, experience with the system, or any other rating scales that are good to consult.

Thanks, and sorry a long post.

I have used the Maltby system to select a shaft before and therecommendation was spot on. I would bet that his club rating system is pretty accurate too. It doesn't have the subjectivity of reviews like the Hot List either. I don't work for him or anything but have read both his fitting book and his club repair book. And was impressed with him.

She was a true sport that day! Best part is, she is a way better golfer than me, and beat me wicked bad!

Seriously, no one else can lend feedback from their experiences with this rating system for irons?

I think you have the score a little bit confused. The higher the score does not mean it is a better club just that the club is more forgiving. As I am sure you noticed some of the better players irons have a very low score while the big game improvement clubs have a much higher score. I really believe that he does a very good job with this list. I purchased his MMB irons and I can not tell you how happy I am with them. He states that they are a blade that plays as forgiving as some of the lesser game improvement irons and I attest to that. It really is a solid list.

Thank you very much for this info! That was my biggest question; what the overall score meant. Really appreciate your input.
