Phil Mickelson shot his best opening round (67) at the Waste Management Phoenix Open since a 64 in 2004 (T7).

• Jhonattan Vegas, who is the first rookie to lead the FedExCup at any point of a season since its inception in 2007, shot a 1-under 70 in the first round.

• All 12 players that finished among the top 10 last week at the Farmers Insurance Open are in this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open field. Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Jhonattan Vegas, D.A. Points, Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan, Nick Watney, Bill Haas, Marc Leishman, Troy Matteson and Brandt Snedeker.

• Six former Arizona State Sun Devils are competing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open this week: Matt Jones, Phil Mickelson, Pat Perez, Billy Mayfair, Jeff Quinney and Chez Reavie. Mayfair (15 made cuts, four top-10s) is making his 25th career start at the event.

• The last 10 champions of the Waste Management Phoenix Open dating to 2001 have combined for just two bogeys on the par-3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale. Phil Mickelson (1996) was the last player to win the event playing the 16th hole above par for the week.
