PGA Announces Results Of Tee It ForwardIt's the inaugural year of national initiative
By The PGA Of America
August 11, 2011

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. â€" Consumers provided extremely positive feedback from their experiences in the first year of TEE IT FORWARD, the national initiative supported by The PGA of America (PGA) and the United States Golf Association (USGA). TEE IT FORWARD, which was formally conducted at facilities nationwide from July 5-17, encourages golfers to play faster and have more fun by playing from tees best suited to their ability.

Initial responses from a consumer survey indicated that 70 percent of the respondents found golf more enjoyable; 90 percent said they played faster or at about the same pace; 91 percent were likely to recommend
TEE IT FORWARD to a friend and would likely use it again; and 52 percent stated they were likely to play golf more often knowing they could use TEE IT FORWARD.

A separate PGA survey found that 1,923 facilities were officially registered or reported results for the
TEE IT FORWARD promotion. An average of 123 golfers per facility used the guidelines and approximately 237,000 total golfers used TEE IT FORWARD during the promotion period. The survey found that 86 percent of the facilities were likely to continue promoting TEE IT FORWARD throughout the year.

“We are extremely pleased with the initial results from golfers using TEE IT FORWARD,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “Golfers told us that they had a positive experience. It was our hope that by moving to a different set of tees, golfers would have a more enjoyable, relaxing and fun experience â€" that certainly appears to be the case.”

TEE IT FORWARD was launched in May during the 72nd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid. It was further promoted by the USGA during the U.S. Open Championship in June and the U.S. Women’s Open Championship in July.

“The emphasis here is on playing faster and having more fun, with the hope that people will want to play more,” said USGA President Jim Hyler. “We see this initiative continuing on well into the future. I’m a prime example of someone who was focused on playing a 6,600- or 6,700‑yard golf course. Once I moved up to about 6,200 yards, I said, ‘Wow, this makes a difference. It’s more fun.’”

A few of the anecdotal results from people using TEE IT FORWARD include a female golfer recording her first hole-in-one and an 85-year-old woman cutting 30 minutes off her round and breaking 100 for the first time in years.

Barney Adams, the founder of Adams Golf, provided the concept that led to TEE IT FORWARD. By playing from forward tees, amateur golfers have the chance to play the course at the same relative distance as a touring professional would over 18 holes. Thus, the playing field is leveled by giving golfers an opportunity to play from distances that are properly aligned with their abilities.

The PGA and USGA provided more than 11,000 facilities around the country with TEE IT FORWARD information and promotion materials. While the first year of the initiative had specific dates in July, golfers are encouraged to TEE IT FORWARD at any time on any golf course.

interesting stats, but this is kinda funny to me......."and 52 percent stated they were likely to play golf more often knowing they could use TEE IT FORWARD."........Are these people playing course's that are making them tee it up at a certain marker?

I didn't tee it FORWARD, I teed it BACK for high school golf. Considering the best I can do at a 6800 and over course is 88 and I've done 75 from 6100 yards, it's obvious that teeing it forward would be a success just based on this.

I would venture to guess that they had been playing from a certain tee for a long time (ego, others played from there, etc, etc) and never thought about moving forward. TIF may have made them think about their driving distance, reaching the green in regulation with good shots and other info.

Now we need a grass root effort to have more people move forward.

Speed of play in my group is defined by how many balls we end up searching on wayward shots and how deep the rough is. When the other groups have that problem....long day.

Mmmm. If "facilities" equals golf courses or approximates that, this stat means only about 12% of the courses in the U.S.A. participated. I like the program, but saw no signs of it this past month and I played at five different courses and got email information from three others during the past month.

If "facilities" includes other golf related stops like off course golf retailers and practice facilities, then the participation rate of courses was even less.

This is the world we live in: idiocracy.

"You mean I could've been playing these tees all along? Why didn't I think of that?"

I'd say "unbelievable" but it's sadly very, very believable. We blame the recession, our wars, anything and everything that goes bad in this country on the government, the president, Wall Street or whatever, and the whole time we're so stupid we don't know we can walk up 20 yards and hit from there.

And, hey, who doesn't need a friendly reminder once and awhile? I certainly do.

But honestly, the fact that this program was necessary in the first place boggles my mind. It does not speak highly for society's combined I.Q.

amazingly enough I can't get the guys in my group to move forward, They contend that they can play from the back tees, They can,but they play very badly.I played at a course last week from the tee one up from the usual one and it was a much more pleasant round. I was actually hitting 7&8 irons to the greens

As the saying goes ... sometimes you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Some people are so set in their ways they are not open to change. And I hope the next time you play with them, you still play up a tee and maybe they can see the difference. You might take some "ribbing" from them as I do ... but don't let it deter you from playing "your" game. In time, maybe they will come around.

No kidding right. "Hey! Now that the Marshall isn't standing on the first tee with a gun to my head and laughing at me for playing from the whites, I think I'll play more often."

I did yesterday. I played from the white and they played back one, a six hundred yard difference. I smoked them. They weren't having alot of fun, throwing clubs and cussing. I had a great day and a pretty good round

The program was designed for many reasons one of which is to combat EGO'S.......No need to beat a dead horse but how many times have you walked up to a tee box to await your tee time and the group in front of you is at the tips, 3 out of four don't even pass the ladies tee(dickout golf) and you know you are following them, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh long day! One of the many reasons I left publc golf!
