Keeping the driver in the bag?

I was having a really bad round yesterday and decided to keep the driver in the bag on the back nine. My 3w is not exactly one of my favorite clubs, so I was hitting a 3I (hybrid). Kept it in the fairway every time, hit about 200 consistently (not all that far, but good enough).
It got me thinking.. Maybe I should do that for the next few rounds, and just work on my driver on the range. Driver is one of the few clubs that translates well from the range to the course, since there really is no lie to affect.
A friend of mine that I play with can't hit his driver straight to save his life, but he refuses to use a different club, as he feels that he should be working on his driver (plus he thinks he's much better than he really is....)

Is this a good approach? Hitting driver only at the range for a week or two, while giving up some distance (but gaining control) on the course? The biggest problem I see with this is attacking long par 4s (450y or so). Would have to hit the ball very solid to have a shot at a par or bogey

Ilya - this exact approach worked well for me during my last round. I, like you, used my 3 hybrid and hit 10 of 12 fairways, each averaging about 200 yards as well.

The driving range is the only place to practice, not on the course. I'm working on using my driver as well, and it looks like I'm finally going to take it out on my next round next week.

Good luck on your practice, and I'm sure you'll be taking out the big boy again soon.

I just experienced this about two weeks ago. I could not hit my driver to save my life most of the time I couldn't even come off the box. it was really frustrationg because I usually drve really well. One of my rounds I put my driver on time out for the next two rounds. I just went off with my three wood and everything was good since I can take my three wood off a tee about 230. Anyway I picked my driver back up the other day and i am driving the ball right down the middle and better than I was before. I don't know if that had anything to do with it but maybe it was just a confidence thing but what ever it was I am enjoying the game again. If I were you I would put it on time out and make it think about what it is doing wrong. LOL
Good luck.

I think it's a good move too. I've been having trouble with my driver lately. When it's one of those bad days, I leave it in the bag and hit my 5-wood instead (I don't have a 3-wood), then hit one of my hybrids for my second shot. I realized that it doesn't really hurt my score to use my 5-wood. A good 5-wood shot is better than a bad driver shot for sure ;)
