Just wondering what exercises works the best before you play.
I do a few touch my toes, stretch my arms and also a few reps of what the Navy called chopping wood. Legs spread, knees bent and extend arms out and pretend I chopping wood on the ground. Seems to help but still stiff the first couple holes, then the back goes ouch.. Watch your best warm up exercises? Thanks in advance, wd |

1. I hold a golf club out in front of my body with my arms extended horizontally. I turn the club 180 degrees to the left and then turn my upper body to the left. I hold it for 5 seconds. I repeat by turning the club 180 degrees to the right and turning my upper body to the right.
2. While supporting myself with a club in my right hand, I place my right foot above my left knee and then squat into a sitting position. Hold for 5 seconds. I repeat by placing the club in my left hand for support and place my left foot above my right knee and squat into a sitting position. 3. I step on a raised surface of about 3-4 inches with my right foot and lean forward. Hold for 5 seconds. I repeat with the left foot. 4. I take a golf club and hold it in both hands out in front of my body and lean over at the waist without bending my knees. 5. I take my 5 & 6 iron and swing them back and forth several times in a medium speed golf swing. |

I'm bad at this. All I do is take my driver and take about 10 practice swings getting gradually faster each time. I'm young and limber at 16 so I can afford to do this.

No wonder your back complains. You aren't doing anything to warm up the muscles that are involved in rotating your torso. The golf swing is primarily rotating around the spine. Look to add to your routine something like the first exercise ArizonaBlue gave you. (There are others that are similar such as holding onto a vertical support on the golf cart with your arms against a rotated lower body.) The point is get some stretching in that involves rotating the torso.

I love to warm up this old body but usually rushing to get on and get in 9 before dark so my body gets neglected many times and I don't do my best for the first few holes. During the summer when there is more time or on a weekend I usually do some rotational stretches using the cart and touch toe stretches with legs together, apart a foot or two and then side to side. If no cart I use a club to do some rotational stretches The rotational seem to help the most especially with distance.
When I don't do some I find accuracy and distance suffer. |
