This past weekend my family came into town and we got a t-time at a local course. It was my mom, brother, and I. We got a 6:30 t-time so we could get back to family. We were the first group off, and on hole 6 let a twosome play through. We made the turn in 1 hr and 40 minutes - not blazing, but not bad considering we let someone play through. We arrived at hole 10 to find one group teeing off, and one group in line. We were not happy and went to find out what was going on in the proshop. They said they were double teeing and that we played too fast. I couldn't believe it. We got in line and waited our turn. As we were on the t-box, the pro shop attendant yelled at us from the veranda that there were still more times to go off and we had to wait. I couldn't believe it. We went in and asked what the deal was. He said they had more times and we needed to wait another 15 minutes. I was beyond frustrated and told him that was ridiculous and that we had a 6:30 time. No one even told us they were double-teeing at that and the group that played through us had already teed off on 10. The guy asked me what I wanted - I told him not to be forced to play a 4 1/2 hour round. He laughed at me. The back nine was so backed up, that it easily would have been 3 hours. I understand double-teeing to get more morning times in, but you've got to let people know. Especially when we were expecting to get off first and set the pace. I also can't believe they are forcing people to play 4 1/2 - 5 hour rounds. The pro was in the shop and never came to the counter, just told the guy not to worry about it with a wave of his hand. Just wanted to vent and see how common this is on other courses. I have never left a course this frustrated.

Actually I have been on a course that did that. My league had a 7 am tee time and they didnt tell us they double teed and our round ended up being 6 hours long since they started a ladies group on 10 and put us behind them. They played super slow. We (20 of us) could have finished in half that time. We let the course GM have a piece of our minds and he ended up buying us lunch for the hole group but needless to say we will never go to that course again, league or individually. 11 years of playing and that is the ONLY time I have seen or heard of a course doing that. Greedy bastards!

I have never experienced this with a morning tee time but I have with an evening time. The course closed the front 9 mid way through the afternoon for fertilizing and spraying so every one after that had to start on the back 9 plus there were still people making the turn. Needless to say, #10 got really crowded.

that $h8t would never fly at my course.
Now granted I have gone off the the 10th when I saw a couple groups stacked on the 1st tee but there wasn't anyone on 9 so no harm there. Had there been anyone making the turn I would have waited.

In your case that's absurd; I've never heard of any course double teeing.

Double teeing is a stupid thing for a golf course to do in the long run of things. It may help in the short term getting in a few extra $$$, but people aren't going to want to play there in the future if that crap keeps happening. My courses have me start off #10 only when some type of event is going on, or if they ask me which I'd rather play when it's logical situation and not stupid like that course you played.

Where was the course so that we can avoid it if we ever think about playing it.

The course is just outside of Murfreesboro, Tn. It is called Champions Run. I am glad to see what others have said. At first, I thought maybe I was overreacting, especially since the pro shop saw nothing wrong with any of it. If they would have told us, we could have expected maybe a little back up at the turn, (granted it was more than a little) but it was never explained.

Ben, that is a pretty quick round you had going, you played the front nine averaging about 11 minutes a hole for a threesome, that is quick on almost every course I play. I think the course was figuring you for the average 4 hour round so you arrived at the 10th tee earlier than they expected. But they should have explained that when you booked the tee time and you could have taken a little more time on the front and gone right into the back nine. Probably wouldn't have been the big deal if they had handled it better and let you drop in on the back and continue. I think I would have asked for my money back and left after 9 but it sounds like that would have ruined a good day planned. A short letter to the pro explaining what happened and letting them know you will not be playing there again or recommending it to anyone might get you a free round, or nothing at all, but worth the try.

I agree James. We played 15 minutes faster than they expected us to play, but like you said, we should have been given a heads up. Also, the twosome that played through us just slipped right into the back nine. We were not told to wait, and looked stupid as the attendant started yelling at us to let a group tee off first while we are standing there with our tee in the ground. We did stop after nine - we had more groups to play through. Apparently they were a little backed up and running behind. We would have had to wait 30 minutes in between finishing the front and playing the back. Had a good weekend, just a bad morning at the course. I will definitely e-mail the pro today. Thanks,

Ben

The course I usually play has an "Early Bird" rate to play the back 9. It starts when the course opens and ends when the first group makes the turn. I would also be very unhappy with the situation you describe, but I would only be unhappy about it ONCE!!

This is one of the main reasons I joined a country club. If I take a cart I can play 18 holes in 2 hours. And if for some reason the course is full...I can play a couple of holes...jump a couple of holes and not have to worry about wating money.

And taking my 3 and 6 year old out we have created our own front nine...playing 1-3, then cutting to play 7-9 (assuming the course is empty which it usually is).

The way I thought that was supposed to work is that the group coming off nine still had priority on ten unless they stopped at the turn.

Wow I have never heard that - I've had them send us off the back if the front is really jammed but they aren't making the turns yet. Even if they double book I think those they send off 10 should be advised that if a group is making the turn they have "right of way" so to speak.

Ya know... you might want to send the above in an email to the course. The link on this site is out of date, but the courses website has a contact email listed. You may wish to mention that you are active in a social networking site for golfers and that you have shared this experience with us. The course has a facebook page as well, you can always leave a comment there too. Nobody with a bunch of money tied up in a golf course wants to have customers not happy and not only not coming back but telling others about a bad time as well. Your pro shop buddies may get an earful and you might just get comped a round.

Some times a course has let me go off the back to start my round but they will not let me do that if I cutting someone off that is playing the 9th hole. I would have told them to give me back half my money and I would be on my way, I need to be kissed before I'm screwed.

That is amazing. I am with you, that is HARD to believe. I had 2 bad experiences at a course and I VOWED not to return. And it was a good track too.
It really does stink when you are making good time and the the brakes get pulled on you ....
