Having John Daly in a PGA tour field is literally a waste of space. The player, ranked #666 in the world, walked off the course after yet another meltdown. I believe he's now withdrawn from 27 PGA tour events since 2000.

From cbssports.com:

SYDNEY (AP) -John Daly has had another golfing meltdown, walking off the course at the Australian Open on Thursday after hitting at least five or six balls - officials aren't sure of the number - into the water on the 11th hole at The Lakes.

Daly was 7 over after 10 holes in the first round after becoming upset with a ruling on the 10th that penalized him two strokes. He casually putted out on the 10th and took a triple-bogey 7.

On the 11th, he hit ball after ball into the water, some landing in the center of the pond, before a tour official joined him. Moments later, Daly shook hands with playing partners Craig Parry and Hunter Mahan and walked off the course.

In a Twitter post later, Daly said: "when u run out of balls u run out of balls. yes, I shook my player's partners hands & signed my card w/rules official."

Trevor Herden, Golf Australia's director of tournaments, called Daly's actions "unprofessional" and said action needed to be taken against him.

Herden said Daly appeared to become upset after hitting the wrong ball out of a bunker on 10 - apparently there were two there, one from the nearby practice range.

"I believe he has gone down 11, hitting five or six balls in the water - I am not exactly sure," Herden said. "Anyway, he walks right off the golf course, with his son behind him, got in the courtesy car and went straight back to his hotel."

Herden said he was "bitterly disappointed" by Daly's actions.

"It is very disappointing for the tournament ... that he has treated the championship this way," Herden said. "It is a bit of a habit, but it is unacceptable and I certainly hope all the tours deal with it in an appropriate manner this time."

Asked why the Australian Open would have paid him appearance money to be here, Herden replied: "I am not going to talk about appearance money, but he likes to come back this time of year to Australia.

"He is a major winner, we have to pay him some respect, too, even though his times have moved on slightly. But I would say this will be the last time we will see John Daly."

The PGA Tour of Australasia later issued a statement saying no appearance fees had been paid to Daly. It also said Daly's actions Thursday would be referred to a disciplinary committee.

Daly, now ranked 666th in the world, was next scheduled to play Australian PGA at the Hyatt Regency course at Coolum in two weeks.

"I think you might find that might change," Herden said, and the statement later said that the tour had withdrawn its offer for Daly to play at Coolum.

"The PGA does not need this kind of behavior tarnishing the achievements of other players and the reputation of our tournaments," the statement said. "John is not welcome at Coolum."

In 2002, after taking a triple-bogey 7 on his last hole at the Coolum course, Daly threw his putter and ball into a greenside pond and later failed to sign for a 78 on his scorecard, disqualifying himself from the tournament.

He was later fined $5,600 by the Australasian PGA Tour and was ordered to write a letter of apology to a tour official he verbally abused.

Two years ago at the Australian Open, he smashed a spectator's camera into a tree at Royal Sydney's ninth hole. He was given a suspended fine by Golf Australia.

The problem with JD retiring is all his other "hobbies" are more destructive than allowing him to play.

Time for him and Dennis Rodman to team up in their own reality show.

I've tried to be on his side, but I give up. 2nd tourney in a row where he's showed his a$$.

I think he should be banned from the PGA Tour.

Otherwise, he can continue to act like a spoiled brat because he knows tourneys will give him exemptions. He's just using people. He does not appear to appreciate the breaks he's been given. There are other guys who play as bad or worse than him, but they are still out there every week grinding it out.

He did this sh*t in front of his son. Really? What a POS. Some role model.

Maybe force him to seek therapy if he wishes to continue playing.

If in a few years he wants to play on the Champions Tour, make him go through Q School and tell him it's one and done if he is not 100% professional.

It's time for him to give up because of his attitude. Not because he can't play. I know it was only out of 30 players, but he had a 9th in the Shanghai Masters which was a really strong field, and he also had the same place finish in the Canadian Open. But when you behave as bad as he does, you shouldn't be able to play out there. I like John a lot, but I don't want to see him on the course anymore when a PGA tournament is occurring the same week.

The question is odd. Clearly, Daly retired from golf a long time ago.

The fact that John let himself hit 5 balls into the same hazard is proof alone that he should not be out there.

Hit a ball into the water? Then DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT on your next shot...take an extra club...take a different line around the water...hit a freakin' wedge or something and lay up. Something other than hitting the same shot with the same club again. Don't be an idiot.

John was such a talented player, perhaps more so than anyone in recent history...but totally wasted it.

Time for JD to move on, We all have a bad day or bad hole. To hit ball after ball into the water so you don't have enough to play all 18 holes? No thanks!

I think the story of John Daly is a sad one. I think that for the most part golf fans have been a bad influence by cheering on his destructive side. Fans who would offer the guy a beer when they knew he had drinking issues.

John Daly in my opinion had just as much ability as Phil and perhaps even Tiger, but it goes to show you that a gift can be squandered. In his prime Daly could hit it a mile, and yet chip and putt with the best of them.

My sincere worry is that his personal life is spiriling out of control and I don't think its easy for someone who at one time was sitting on top of the moutain to accept such a brutal fall.

I hope that John can find some peace and turn his life around so that he can enjoy the game again and perhaps be cheered on the Champions Tour some day.

I didn't see the coverage, but the way I read the article, he hit all those balls into the water deliberately. Not incompetence, but deliberate petulance.

If that's the case, then screw him.

Ben Hogan would slap him in the face.

I think that he should just try the Long Drive Competitions out and leave the PGA alone til he qualifies for the Champions Tour. He prolly wouldnt win but he would draw a crowd. There are a few guys out there on the Long Drive tours that are putting the ball out there over 450 yds.
