Learning the game of golf has got to be one of the most frustrating pursuits of all time. It seems like you can find a tip that says do one thing, only to find the next tip that says do the very opposite.

Here's a perfect example:

Can you imagine trying to "catch your chip shot on the upstroke"? That'll fix the chili-dips for sure, you'll be skulling the ball all over the course, but you won't chili-dip...

I mean, this gives teaching pros a bad name.

Well, I can see where Shawn is coming from (and keep in mind, he's not talking about chips, he's talking about full shots), but I don't think it's the right way to fix the problem. It puts the wrong mental picture in your mind, I think.

I think a better way to think about how much turf to take is to realize what PART of the club is supposed to enter the ground. All these giant divots we see weekend golfers take, they're usually the product of trying to take a divot with the face of the club. They lead the club with the hands so far, they just drive the face right into the ground.

In reality, the part of the club that's SUPPOSED to enter the ground is the sole! We tend to totally forget about the sole of the club because we're so conscious of the ball contact off the clubface. But if you swing the club with the intention of just getting the sole into the ground right under the golf ball, you will take a proper amount of turf.

I always would consider a chili-dip to only apply to a chip shot. that little stabby, fat chip that goes no where and makes you feel like a total fool...

first check of a golf glossery seems to say the same:

http://en.mimi.hu/golf/chili-d..

anyway, I can't really see what he means.... I'd rather picture the clubhead staying lower than that angle after the strike of the ball, wouldn't you? and he clearly says, "try to hit the ball more on the upstroke." I mean, i hate to beat a dead horse, but geez...

Thats the reason I stopped reading the tips section of the golf mags. Sometimes you get so much crap in your head it just bogs your whole game down.

No S. I've NEVER heard anyone teach hitting an iron on the upswing. I'm sure he's helped lots of people, but I'd tell him hells no to his face on this one.

(and almost 90% of my chili-dips have come from decelerating, anyway ... not from a too inside-out swing path ... or is that even what he's saying? i can't tell)
