i am so upset with the actions of tiger woods i have followed his career day in and day out. he has destroyed the game we all love and play even though i cannot hold what he did in his personnel life it still offends me as to what he has done to the golf world. just wanted to get some of your thoughts on this? maybe i should rephrase this not really destroyed the game but golf is a game of honesty respect and ettiquette i guess that is what i was reffering to sorry for the confusion. its just that tiger always portrayed being such a great family man

Has he destroyed the game? Yes and no. No because he's brought a lot more popularity and attention to golf, and yes because he distracts everyone from talking about actual golf and instead people talk about how they saw him at a Nickelback concert. I enjoy seeing him get pissed off and throw his clubs and I laugh when he misses a cut or misses a short putt. He deserves it for what he did to his family. Poetic justice.

He has has not destroyed THE game. He may have destroyed HIS game. There is a big difference between the two. There was great golf before Tiger and there will be great golf after Tiger. He may be affecting the future history of golf but one man can't destroy the game.

Tiger has made no impact on me or my game whatsoever. I enjoy watching him play because he is the best. He isn't the best right now but he will be again in about a year or so. He has disgraced his family and needs to make amends there. Other than that, Tiger needs to fix his head, and his game so that we can watch him make history.

I couldn't have said it better if I'd have written this. I am in 100% agreement.

How has he destroyed the game we love. He hasn't affected my game at all and I'll still be watching him on tv and following him next month when I go out the the US Open--No, he's not the same player he was. But hopefully with time and once the media quit hounding the guy, he will regain his form. For those who think he won't pass Nicklaus now are only fooling themselves. Tiger is only 32, 33 years old. He still has 10-15 years of prime golf to get 6 majors. Which means he only has to win 1 every other year. I'm a fan of Tigers golf game and what he has done. He has made shot after shot look easy. What he has done with his personnel life is none of my business. My boss has put me in my position as a regional manager because of my experience and my dedication as an employee. He doesn't stick his nose in my personnel life. I firmly believe that the people that continue to be hard on Tiger are the same people that never liked the guy to begin with. All the past 6 months have done is give them more of a chance to throw him under the bus and back over him time and time again~~

I agree. People who are dumping on Tiger now are the ones who've been dumping on Tiger for years. They are also the ones to complain that Tiger is getting preferential treatment when fans say that he should be cut some slack. To those anti-Tigerites let me say this, If you are a true sports fan you are bound to like a cheater. You can hate Tiger but don't hate him just because he's a cheater because guaranteed, you like at least one athlete who has cheated on his/her spouse.

Also cogolfer1 are you Rick Reilly? Are you going to give us this sappy story about how Tiger losing shows that karma exists? Are you going to tell us that figjam Phil Mickelson is a modern-day Hercules? If you are going to take that route please spare us the time. There are plenty of instances where poetic justice (a.k.a. karma) has not ocurred in sports, plenty of cheaters, Ruth, Ali, Jordan, Johnson, Bryant, O'neal, have won titles. Ray Lewis may've murdered a guy and a year later he won a Super Bowl. Lawrence Taylor won 2 Super Bowls but has been arrested for tax evasion, rape, and has been caught with drugs more times than one can count. So please spare karma comments because karma can't work if it isn't real.

First of all Rick Reilly is awesome. I know most people don't like him but I do. Anyway I've never liked Tiger since I've been a fan of golf which dates back to 2005. I got sick of seeing him win every single week and making it Tiger Woods and golf instead of golf and Tiger Woods. The scandal just made me dislike him even more. Athletes get all this money and let it get to their heads and then kill, rape, or steal. That's why all the athletes you mentioned I am not a fan of and I like people like Mickelson, Shannon Sharpe, Steve Nash, Albert Pujos, and Lebron James. Some people may not be as good as athletes as others but they are much better people which is what I really look for.

I never said I hated Reilly, I just don't like how he has loved Tiger for years and just recently turned on him.

Also, the athletes you mentioned seem perfect but I doubt all of them have escaped infidelity, etc. I love Pujols, if he's a cheater or anything else there's no hope for anyone, but Shannon Sharpe? He's basically the NFL's Shaq and Shaq cheated on his wife. I'm not assuming Shannon is unfaithful but I would watch out before you call him a saint. Nash seems fine. Don't get me started on Mickelson. LeBron is interesting though. I'm a Cavaliers fan so I do really like LeBron but to call him a great role model is a hasty generalization. LeBron has let fame get to his head, the media is to blame for some of the overdramatization around LeBron but he perpetuates it too. I mean the left-handed free throw was not needed, if his elbow hurt that badly he would've left the game. Stuff like that worries me about LeBron's character, I love him but to call him a great man is a little bit hasty.

It would be great if all of our star athletes were great men who stayed faithful to their wives but that's just not true. Of the 5 men you mentioned any one of them could be doing misdeeds. Magic Johnson was a very happy-go-lucky guy, but he had 300 sex partners a year while he was married. The 5 guys you mentioned seem like great models but its not smart to label them as such when you know so little about them.

I think people have told me this exact same thing 179 times now on this website. You don't know if they did anything wrong, so why speculate? That's what makes this world so crazy and screwed up. You and I don't know more about any athlete I mentioned so why say things like that? Imagine if people said Martin Luther King was having affairs or smoking crack without any evidence or proof. Do you know anything for 100% about anyone I mentioned having affairs or smoking or raping? Probably not. So why would you throw that out there if you don't know it? I didn't tell anyone before Thanksgiving on Stracka that Tiger could be having affairs when I didn't know it. Could you imagine where that may have gotten us?

Woods is almost 35. If you ever did something as stupid as Woods did, and whatever you are regional manager of, if your clients were aware of how irresponsibly you acted, I'd bet your boss would't be very thrilled with you. I also don't think he would have made you a regional manager if he knew you tried to screw everything that wore a skirt. Woods deserves everything he is getting. It couldn't have happened to a worser guy.

I think we all have our demons. Most of our demons are private and some are aired for the whole world to see. I don't whimsically excuse Tiger's betrayal of his wife, but then again why should I care? Why do you care so much?

Personally I think this has become more of a societal issue. That we as consumers, or fans get so wrapped up in the lives of people we see on tv, the big screen, or magazines that we get vested in their lives (or atleast we think we do). Why do you care? Why does my wife care that Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie?

This is exactly the irrational thinking that is going on with golf fans.

Let me throw this out at you...
I ask "why should you care"...now let me rebutt what the most common answers tend to be.

1) Its a bad example for my kids.
Hey I have kids too and I still think this is stupid and obessive fanatic behavior. If your kids look to Tiger as a role model, I think that speaks poorly upon you. Wow that was harsh, but its your job as a parent to educate your kids. Professional athletes are not role models, and they might actually be the worst people in the world to look up to. They are given everything and quite frankly are probably the most apt to cheat on their spouses.
Furthermore, the divorse rate is right around 50% so there is enough blaim to go around.

2) He portrayed himself as a family man.
Would you prefer to act as a man whore with strippers at his arm at the Green Jacket Ceremony? Ok that was uncalled for, but seriously how did Tiger portray himself as a family man? And even if he had a role in that image, who cares? Marketing and advertising is full of lies and deceit and that goes for golf marketing. Do you really think that every driver on the market hits the ball longer and straighter than everything? Or that so and so wedge spins the ball better than every wedge ever made, even after they banned the spinning grooves? Seriously grow up. If you bought Tiger as a family man or anyone for that matter you need to wake up and smell the roses.

3) He let golf down or is ruining the game.
Seriously this is really naive. Plenty of all-time greats have cheated on their spouses and some like Walter Hagen did so publically, others like Harry Vardon were discovered years later and some have yet to be discovered. I have heard some very serious talk about a couple of the greatest golfers who ever lived, and their adultery. I won't post it, because I don't have any evidence. EIther way Tiger's transgressions have no effect on the game of golf, despite reports the game is bigger than Tiger Woods. He could retire tomorrow and the game would continue.

I should go on, but I think everyone gets the point of where I am going.
