Martin Kaymer grabbed the number one spot from Lee Westwood today with his semi-final win. there are a lot of guys that could grab it in the next few months, does he hold on or are we gonna see a revolving door kinda thing throughout the year?

I think Kaymer could hold it for a while. There is the potential for a couple different guys battling it out. I think it is only a matter of time before McDowell is playing for the #1 spot and Mickelson and Woods should both be a factor at the Masters and either of those 2 would probably take over with a win there.

I do think it was total crap that Westwood was ever ranked #1, I don't know how they could really change it but there should be some type of requirement like you have to win 4 regular tournaments or 1 major to qualify or something like that. Bottom line for me is the OWGR don't put enoogh emphasis on winning. Westwood has only won 3 times in the last 2 years, the St.Jude in 2010, the Dubai World Championship and something called the Portugal Masters in 2009, not exactly tearing it up.but did rack up a lot of high finishes in that time. Consistently finishing high indicates you are ONE of the best but, not necessarily THE best.

Revolving door. It has been one for a year or more now. The "stats" that kept Tiger #1 for so long, when he wasn't winning or even placing well are designed to keep the top players "protected" in the ratings when they have a little slump. Takes a BIG slump for the ratings to readjust. Unless Tiger gets his A game back or some other player steps up and wins 8-10 tournaments a year, it'll stay a revolving door.

just the thaught of anyone ranked even in the top 200 out of the Bazillion golfers in the world amaizes me.. the thaught of being or saying i was the noumber one player in the world or hottest player in the world is something i can only dream about. we rip on Tiger, and Daly and anyone who finnishes in the top 5 often but cant get a win but every once in a wile. we rip on guys like BJ for his silly freakish pre shot and guys for what they wear or how they slip up and break a golf rule... yet all these guys are like the Albert Einstiens of golf.. Geneus Freaking individuals. Its amaizing to me that they arent as big of Misfits as they apear to be.
world no 1 or world no. 50.. it still blows my mind what kind of Freaks these guys are.. and yes even the guy ranked 200 in the world is a freak and i have a better chance to scratch my ear with my elbow then to imagine how these guys like Norman , Stricker, Freddie, guys like jerry Kelly , phil Tiger , Paven .. hell all of them that play for 30 years and stay ranked so high.. oh well that guys only ranked 60th in the world you say? Tiger may drop to 15 for a wile.. Who cares these guys are FREAKS!

Kaymer has been the best player in the world since he won the PGA in August. It was pretty screwed up that Westwood had the #1 ranking when he had done so little as far as winning. I mean his only PGA Tour wins are the St. Jude and Zurich Classic. Two of the weakest tournaments on schedule. Kaymer's biggest threat I think is McDowell. He's finished 3rd, 4th, and 9th in the 3 tournaments he's played in this year. And let's not forget Chevron, the Ryder Cup, and obviously the US Open. His next biggest threat is Tiger. It's inevitable he's going to get out of this slump sometime and when he does he'll get close to #1 again.

cog has a point! the only player in the world i can think of that can string togather 3 or four wins in a row and one or even 2 could be majors is Tiger. i jus think he is a year off get . never know though.. but our FED ex points leader may be a dark horse to sneak in and take the noumber 1 for a wile.. he seems to have a game that can challenge leaderboards on a more consistant way.. a felllow wisconsin golfer i think Stricker settled him down with some help on tour consistancey and play but i think the Guy has a natural gift to be able to post a very low round often. and we know he can handle pressure.. its going to be great to watch golf this year.. Euro heavy hitters showing up for the majors, young Guns. Bombers like Bubba.. grizzly Vets like Vjay, a handfull of Champions Tour Old timers that can Win a major yet.. What a show its going to be.. oh and ya the Sub plot of the story with Tiger working his way back to the game.. Im pumped.. what a story line..

Hey COG don't be bashing my Zurich Classic! He is the best player in the world today and the fact that Westwood was ever above him was astounding.

Just for the record Westwood has 20 victories on the European Tour.
I know you guys don't rate it but it looks as though after this weekend the top 4 golfers in the world will be European.
Nice of them to give Bubba & Kuchar the consolation of a third/fourth play off though, whilst the big boys play for the real money ;-)

They always have a consolation match ;-) And Kaymer has 8 European tour wins and 1 PGA tour win, which was a major something Westwood doesnt have and most likely won't get. But the European players are hands down the best in the world right now.

Does it surprise you that the Europeans are better than Americans? They are hailing from, what, 15 different countries? I mean come on, its us vs. an entire continent.

Even though Europe outnumbers us by about 2.5 to 1, it is about even in population compared to the USA when you only consider the countries that have a presence in professional golf. I don't think there are any pros from Russia or the Ukraine.

Kaymer is a worthy No1 but I do think you guys have a downer on Westwood and The European Tour in general, I think he is more likely to win a major this year than Tiger is.
The closeness of the Ryder Cup matches in the last 20 years shows just how the tours are of equivalent merit.

I personally don't. When people say the European Tour is a full step down from the US Tour I disagree. It worked like that 5 years ago, but not anymore now. We shouldn't forget that in Abu Dhabi and Dubai this year there were at least 3 of the top 5 in the world in that field. That hasn't happened once in the US so far this year. And you can't count the Accenture for the US because it's both a US and Euro Tour event. So, if you do count the Accenture as one for the US Tour, it's still 3 to 1 Europe. I know that's confusing.

I'm not discounting the talent from Europe at all. Like i said they are hands down better than the Americans. But the PGA Tour is harder than the Euro tour. The courses are newer and, with a few exceptions, made harder than the older European courses. That's why Those like Lee Westwood have a hard time winning on this side of the "pond". 20 European wins to 2 PGA Tour wins just proves my point. And i think Lee and Tiger have about the same chances to win a major 0. BTW Tiger has 38 Euro tour wins which is 3rd all time. And the no European is in the top 20 all time wins on the PGA Tour. The Euro with the most wins on Tour is Tommy Armour and he's 23.
