I'm interested in your opinions on the most overrated and underrated players on the PGA tour. (Optional: provide a brief explanation for your picks.):

The over rated players are simple;

Ian Poulter,Rory McIlroy,Lee Westwood,Rickie Fowler. All these guys get a lot of unwaranted hype.

Fowler and Mcilroy for being supposed "young guns".

Westwood for receiving the undeserved title of #1 player in the world and a huge choker in the majors

Poulter for being one of the biggest narcissists of all time he produces his over ratedness by sheer exposure, with his fashion line and is incessant Twittering.

My main problem with these guys is the attention they get with really accomplishing anything. 3 wins on the PGA tour between the 4 of them, Fowler having 0 and the other 3 with 1 apiece. These guys all contend in majors but contending is not winning.

Under Rated

Padraig Harrington: This guy has 3 majors to his name and while he might be struggling he as almost forgotten when you hear about how great the Euros are.

Jim Furyk: Very solid career with an unconventional swing. He's probably one of the best players of this generation.

Overrated: Rickie Fowler, no question in my mind. Kid can play, but has zero PGA Tour wins to his credit. If he figures out how to win I'll reconsider, but he's just not as solid a player as people say he is. He is 189th in driving accuracy and 164th in GIR. He's a good putter, which makes up for that somewhat...but until he can hit fairways and greens down the stretch he'll not be a real threat.

Remember, that's how Tiger would destroy the field...on Sunday he'd throw 2-iron out there on every tee and never miss a fairway. And Tiger from the fairway is (was) unbeatable.

Underrated: I'm tempted to say Jonathan Byrd. Guy has a very good swing and a solid putter, tends to do quite well in everything he enters, and has a couple wins to his credit.

I agree with River!

Sergio Garcia is nothing but a complainer! He IS a good ball stricker, but doesn't deserve the attention he gets!

Underrated - Luke Donald and Paddy H. They have great games and seem to fly under the radar...

Ya Paddy sure flew under the radar this past weekend, I picked him and he flew way below the cutline radar, He is a good player though, 3 majors, he just had a bad round. Or 2!

Based on world rankings how can Garcia be overrated? He is outside the top 50.Westwood is number 2 based on points earned he deserves to be where he is.Most overrated to me is Woods he shouldnt be in the top 100 based on his play (or lack of)over the last season and a half.

Based on points he earned he deserves to be where he is..........is there an echo, echo, echo, echo......seriously though I was thinking the same thing about Tiger when I first read this, but then if you put him there, soon as he was (if) win one he is gonna be the most underated. I would say is is the MOST OVER HYPED player though.

Underrated- Paul Casey. Who here knew he was #7 in the world rankings?
Overrated- Lee Westwood. If your only wins in America are the St. Jude and Zurich, you need to win a major before I call you the #1 player in the world with confidence.

Not in the top 100??? In the last four majors, he has a T4 in the Masters and US Open, T23 in the British and T28 in the PGA.

Enjoy this Heclaisland, I agree with you 100%. If you win 14 majors and are overrated than everyone else must have 30 at worst. I hate all the attention he gets it, both positive and negative, but he earned it.

Underated, Kuchar & Mark Wilson on the American side, Donald and Casey on for European side. Kuchar reminds of Jimmy Johnson, just gets wins and top 5's and nobody notices.
Overated, Westwood & Rory along with Ryo on the European side. They all show flashes of brillance, buts thats where it ends. As far as the Americans, Mickelson, he can get up for the majors 50% of the time but is hardly in contention during other tourneys.....of late it seems, go ahead people pick me apart now for that comment.

I'm changing my overrated pick from Westwood to Ishikawa. At least the other young guns mentioned here like Rory and Rickie contend regularly or in Rory's case have won. Ryo has done absolutely nothing on the US side. I don't care what he does in Japan. The Montana Women's Golf Association gets as much drama and good golf as Japan does. My prediction is he'll be the next Ty Tryon. Unbelievably hyped but like Humpty Dumpty he will take a great fall.

Under Rated: Luke Donald
Over Rated: Loius Oesthasien( or however you spell it)

lol, won't pick you apart but I think your analogy of jimmy johnson is way off. After the 2nd championship I was sick of it and now it's 5 and counting. I would go more with greg biffle, edwards, martin or harvick, always the brides made. No way in hell I would put johnson as underrated. He's more the tiger of the early 2000's late 90's to me. Complete dominance. You just know he's gonna be there.

I agree with you on that one, I guess I should have said popularity instead for JJ. Just for instance and I don't mean to get away from the main topic. You can buy a JJ race used hood for $400 compared to a Earnhardt Jr for $2000. A JJ race used driver suit fo about $2500- compared to a Jeff Gordon for around $6000. I just think JJ won't get the reconition until his career is over, he's still flying under the radar in my opinion. Kinda like Kuch right now. He finished 2nd in the Fed-Ex Cup last year and has already started out this year great, but no one wants to give him any 2nd looks~

I see your point gj24. Junior is a basically an average racer living off the name his father made. Has 1/4 if of that the nuts his dad had. Kutchar is under radar, so is mahan to me.

Can't stand Jr. Can't stand how he's loved because of his last name and that's it. The only races I was happy he won were the 2001 July 4th race at Daytona and last year's Nationwide race at Daytona where he drove the #3 Wrangler car to the win.
