I am sure that I am not the first and certainly wont be the last to address this topic, however not enough is being said. I am beyond tired of people shouting "get in the hole" after every putt and most approach shots at PGA tournaments. It has gotten to the point where people shout it out too quickly and too often just to hear their voice on TV when they get home and watch the replay. I was in attendance last week at the Travelers Championship and when Perry was putting for birdie on 18 for the title somebody shouted it out before he even connected with the ball. He missed the putt which was difficult and wasn't a putt he needed to convert anyway, however the disruption could have cost him the tournament if the situation was different. I understand the atmosphere has changed at these tournaments, but this has gotten out of hand, particularly the timing and relevancy of the call. It's not funny anymore, I'm sure the pro's hate it and it cheapens the gallery, enough is enough!

The PGA does need to do something about this trend, maybe extending the quiet time for a shot to after 5 seconds after the shot and anyone transgressing this rule intentionally being taken off the course. Just an idea as I find it very annoying and I'm sure most viewers and golfers do.

MarkMat, you have a valid point. I'd amend this to include a one year ban from attending a tour event for those who breach the rule of quiet.

LOL-no rule is written. Let it go, and stop complaining about this subject. LOUD AND PROUD for the PGA...nothing wrong with it. Pro's will, and must get used to it. Like I said, THERE IS NO RULE WRITTEN!!!

There's always a few morons out there who think it's cool or funny. The tours won't address it because of the bad press. The players won't address it because the tour would probably issue them a fine. So what do they do? If I were them, I would start playing with ear plugs! People who insist on shouting after every shot obviously have no respect for the game and have little to no class themselves.

I agree with the no written rule part and being loud and pround just at the right times. I hate to say it pros will never get used to it just ask Chad when he missed the putt at the Masters from someone yelling before the putt.

The people that yell "get in the hole" are pathetic!

It's a golf course not the WWE! Loud and proud? It's a golf course, not the NCAA National Championship!

As golfers, we have a certain code, just like you never check the goalie in hockey, it doesn't have to be written, it's expected. Man, just like a lawyer, worrying if it's a written rule, that you miss the point. It's just really bad form, and pathetic.

By the way, the pro's don't get use to it. They suffer everytime some idiot pipes up. I can see them cringing, so don't tell me they get use to it. Exclusion from the grounds for a year would be a great way to help kill this trend. By the way, I'll bet you were in love with the guy on Happy Gilmore....JACK ASS!

I loved that movie.. It was funny as heck. I would rather here someone yell "get in the hole", than a gent direct name calling, and profanity at someone. Once again, I stand true to LOUD and PROUD is more gentleman like than name calling. Like I said in a previous forum, insulting, and judging people simply because they have more enthusiasm and voice is not, in itself, very gentleman like. Just because someone yells "get in the hole", doesn't make them any less of a person than you or I. I am all for, and will continue to participate, in bringing golf to a new level of LOUD. I will shed a tear when the day comes to hear "OOOOOOOOOOOOO" while a putt is being made. Just like a free-throw. Sorry to expose people's thin skin, but you must accept the fact that everyday, and everywhere, you will hear someone yell. So why not enjoy it, and participate in it. It is actualy fun... I personaly yelled and screamed at the top of my lungs in the 2009 FBR Open during Kenny Perry's and Charlie Hoffman's playoff. I ran step-by-step with them 2 hooting and hollaring down the fairways, tee-boxes, and greens. #10, and #17- It was done in pure sportsmanship, and class. LOUD and PROUD for the PGA... can I get a WOOT WOOT...

I don't know what hockey you refer to, but as a former goalie I can tell you that the goalie gets hit,..a lot.
That's why they came up with the penalty.

That being said, I don't mind the yelling but the phrase is getting long in the tooth. For one thing, if the guy is hitting a tee shot on a 580 yard par five the one thing that sure as hell won't happen is the ball going in the hole.
Save it for the approach shots when the ball has a chance to go in.

The game is changing and fan participation is catching up.
There's a reason the payoff's for the events are so big and that courses are putting all the seats in, it's called MONEY!
If you want the million and change you're going to have to deal with the screamers just like any other sport.
I do agree that they should keep it in their pants until the
shot is away.

I agree ... this phrase is getting a little old. Everytime I hear it I want to say SHADDUP ALREADY! It's like the people who mug for the camera in the background when a reporter is doing a story. Stop already!

# 10    7/6/2009 10:56:00 AM
I can appreciate fan enthusiasm as much as the next guy, but this is getting ridiculous. I hope being drunk is the only excuse people have for yelling this as opposed to just being completly unoriginal. In addition to "Get in the hole" and people sticking their heads in the camera shot, I have to add, if it already hasn't been said, is when 50 people run to hover over the ball on a missed fairway shot like they just found treasure. The only thing I can hope for is that people will soon realize this is getting old or at least that at an event when this is said a fan with actual respect for the game will let that person know how stupid they are and them slap them in their annoying, unimaginative mouth.

Ha! I've noticed this sad, pathetic thing behavior too. What's most amusing is how they all look up at each other and smile after they've staked out their ground. It's like watching cavemen doing something really simple and then being so proud of it: "ooongah..boongah...man hit ball...me run after ball...me see ball on ground near feet...argghhh."

Hooting and hollaring done in class? Wow some people are just such idiots they don't realize how idiotic they are.

I still show way more class on and off the course then you do. I wouldn't, and never did direct name calling, or use profanity. In my threads, or on the course. You have a hard time showing class on threads, I could only imagine how you are in this crazy trip we call life. If you can't see the good sportsmanship in hooting and holloring up and down fairways, while the guys are walking during a playoff for over a half a million... I can only imagine life is as stale as a popcorn fart for you. That is all about excitement for the players and fans during a playoff. People need to get off there high horses and not be afraid of feeling the emotion of golf at its finest. There is no way I would sit my butt on the 18th green and hope they make it back. Light that popcorn fart and get a move on it. Run baby, run... show some emotion and yell your support. Does that sound idiotic? Sounds like my crazy trip through life has a little bit more excitement than a gent afraid of... afraid of what? Exactly!!! There is no rule, and there is nothing wrong with yelling and hollaring in good sportsmanship to your players. How in the heck do you think Phil Mick. knew who to give thumbs up to and not when at Bethpage.. Don't say it, it could be true, was he faking it? Probably not. He was showing his apprectiation for the LOUDEST fan support he heard. Like I said, he was walking. NOT IN BACKSTROKE, OR HITTING.. walking. Don't be afraid of it people... let the PGA hear roars and be LOUD AND PROUD... My hard earned money is just as good as yours, so back off!

like you said ukblue............DOUCHEBAGS !!!!

Real class there tornado..real class. People obviously don't know how to support good conversation material and debate. CHEERS...What I am saying is no different when the Ryder Cup came into KY and screamed and cheered USA while the gents were walking down the fairways. It was totaly chanted for 2 reasons. 1- to show support of our team. 2- to rattle some nervs of the European team. That was too cool to hear the fire in the fans finaly. USA USA USA as they are walking of tee boxes, and greens. It could of beent taking a lot of different ways, but the players knew what to expect coming to our soil and playing. I only would suspect the same when we head over there. Same thing with every weekend PGA event. CHANT AND YELL, nothing is written to say not to. Like I said, real class is being shown here by so called "gentlemen of the game". I think it was written just a couple of threads up, "some people are such idiots, they don't realize how idiotic they are."- just kind of fell into that category men. CHEERS--LOUD AND PROUD for the PGA..

I think the PGA should also ban the mullet, the high five, and extra long golf tee's. Seriously, why do people need their ball four inches off the ground?

There actually is a limit to tee height.
