How many players out there are using fitted clubs?? I would like to know if you think it was worth it to have it done. Also who would you recommend in the DFW area that is good and charged a fair price.

Thanks

YES and YES. If your clubs are not the right flex or lie angle, you will be subconsciously building compensations into your swing. With clubs that are right for you, you can build a good repeating swing without many compensations. That leads to better golf shots!

The biggest factor in getting fitted is lie angle. It affects your golf shots more than anything else, surprisingly enough. Example: If your clubs are too upright (as many clubs are), the heel will contact the ground at impact. This causes the toe to slam shut, which results in a hook. So many people who play with upright clubs hold off their release to compensate, which gives you a weak push/cut that goes nowhere.

Now, before you just go out and buy a new set, go to a fitter and see if he/she can adjust your current set. I say that because I saw you play Callaway...and most of their clubs are cast. Cast clubs are made of a much harder steel than forged clubs, and therefore are quite hard (sometimes impossible) to adjust. Getting fitted for a cast set usually means ordering the set direct from the manufacturer with the needed adjustments already made. But check a fitter first, they might actually be able to adjust them.

Shaft flex makes a little bit of difference, mostly with trajectory rather than direction, although this contradicts what a lot of people think. (Think about long drivers and trick-shot guys that hit balls dead straight with drivers on the end of a super whippy shaft) But Callaways are often uniflex, so that wouldn't factor in with you unless you were getting all new shafts.

I live in D/FW by the way (Carrollton). The best guy I know of is Dave Murray. He works at D.A.'s Spring Creek Driving Range in Plano (off of Spring Creek Pkwy just east of the Dallas North Tollway). He does a lot of work for PGA pros (and some PGA Tour guys!) in the area. That brings up another point: try to stay away from clubfitters in retail stores. Not that they do a bad job, but often they're just going to try and sell you the new thing.

Another thing...I know it's a hike from Ft. Worth, but if you can get to Dave Murray, do it. Call up there and make an appointment for him to see you, because they have a real driving range where you can hit real golf shots and see what the ball does in real life. Something about hitting into a projection screen seems weird to me.

Gents Thanks for all your inputs, sounds like Dave is the guy to go to. To explain a further my plan is to go to graphite shafts, I am looking at some used taylormade Burner Plus, which should be good for a high handi like me. Carroilton is a haul for me however will be getting my used clubs over there at Lou's. You guys that liive over there are very lucky, this shop has a great selection of used stuff at a fair price, and if they do not have it just tell Kevin and when he comes accross it he will contact you.

Thanks again for your help!!!!!!!!

Before you have a repeatable swing ( don't have to look like a swing on the tour, just one that you could count on ), you will not yield maximum benefit from club fitting.

Yes, golf club fitting and golf ball fitting will definitely improve on your golf game.

I LOVE Lou's Golf! I literally live almost across the street from there. Great little store.

As far as steel vs. graphite, though, let Dave decide. Graphite IS lighter and may help you produce more clubhead speed, but the lighter you make a golf club, the harder it will be to feel where the clubhead is during your swing...that ultimately results in less accuracy. While you may not hit it as far with steel shafts, you might find that your dispersion is much tighter. Again, seeing Dave and looking at the ball flight out on the range will tell you what you need. Don't go into the session saying "I want this particular shaft."
