Going to Myrtle Beach for a week in March. A buddy and I are driving down. On the way home to New York does anyone have any suggestions for a nice place to play in the central to southern North Carolina area? If its a great course then price isn't a worry... We called Pinehurst already but you have to stay there to guarantee to play there and we'd be just driving through. Any other unknown beautiful courses you guys know?

If you are going to be coming towards the Pinehurst area than you should try Tobacco Road, The Pit or Pine Needles. If you dont mind driving a little more inland than you can come to my area and play Tot Hill or some of the other courses in my area.

We saw Tobacco Road and that looks nice. We were trying to stay somewhere near I95 so we weren't going to much out of the way...

Don't let the hotel stay hold you back from playing Pinehurst. They have eight courses. You will get on. You could also try to play MidPines or Southern Pines which are right down the road.

MidPines hosts a hickory major every year, and the course is really nice. I have played Pinehurst #2, but I have not played it since the redesign, which as I undersyand really changed the course.

He's asked around and I think we've decided on Tobacco Road. Course looks amazing and its a kinda sorta links style which we won't okay in Myrtle...

If you are going to play Tobacco Road then you need to be sure to bring your sand game with you because there is a lot of it.

I agree with this suggestion 100%. I preferred Tot Hill over Tobacco Road. TR is a little hard on the wallet for basically the same course at Tot Hill.

I don't know if you have courses set in MB but I really liked Pawley's Plantation and Glen Dornoch.

It is really not too far from Pinehurst. Maybe 45 minutes give or take a few minutes. You wont play another course like it anywhere in America. Both courses are rated in the top ten hardest courses in America too.

I actually grew up on Tot Hill Farm Road and my high school was only 2 miles away. I didn't play golf at the time but I use to go camping and hiking right behind the course. I have never played it but I have walked around it and seen more than my fair share of the course. I am making it a priority to play it before I go back into the Army.

I use to live just South of Raleigh.

1.) Tobacco Road is an amazing course. It one of the most memorable golf courses I have ever played. I just have never seen a course like it...even in the Carolinas. They will take really good care of you and going in March you should get a decent price. A word of warning...this course has a lot of blind shots. I spent more time looking at my yardage book than I did at my golf ball. Definately recommend playing it and a lot of fun.

2.) Big Cat Courses (Tiger's Eye) it on the coast and about 15 miles over the border in North Carolina. They are a bit pricy. They have four courses and they are some of the best rated in NC. www.big-cats.com/

3.) Anderson Creek -- this course use to be one of my home courses back in NC. Its designed by Davis Love III. There is sand traps all over this course. www.andersoncreekgolf.com/

Oh one more thing -- I saw on some of the post The Pit. I do recommend it BUT THEY ARE CLOSED FOR ALL OF 2011. Money Troubles. Too bad -- its a great course.
