It was interesting hearing Berman from ESPN commentating today's opening round @ Pebble Beach. De Jonge hit in for eagle on Par 5 #14, ranked as 3rd toughest hole of the day. Amazing shot! Berman did his trademark "....back, back, back....in the hole." He was also tossing around, "Diabolical" and most of his dialog was like listening to a Sports Center recap of the day's NFL games. However, I got to give the guy credit, he doesn't usually do Golf and he kept it kind of humorous.

Anybody else who might of caught some of it, what did you think? What other 'guest' TV men/women would you want to do a broadcast of this awesome tourney?

Berman is the only one on ESPN golf I enjoy listening to. Everyone else is awful. Especially Judy Rankin. He's better at football, but hey he loves the sport and does a good job calling the action.

Agreed, but I'd rather listen to him then Johnny Miller.

I can't stand Chris Berman.... Everybody has to have a F&#%-ing nickname, and it all beats me into submission.... The fact that the "self-proclaimed" World-Wide leader forces him down our throats makes me sick to my stomach.... I've gone on record stating how much I hate the way NBC goes about their golf coverage, and it's just a shame that the Major with the most Television exposure (hours of coverage) is done by them and not CBS....

Berman was fun to listen to on Friday. His rants when Mickelson was paying #8 about "No diving" off the cliff there and yelling "TOUCHDOWN!" after Phil made birdie were hilarious to me. Also when Byoung Hun-An was playing 17 I thought it was funny when he hit the green and went "Oh! Byoung is An!" Good times, good times.

I thought it was just odd. After listening to CoGolfer I can lighten up on Berman but not much. I like SVP, probably due mostly to the Nike commercials though. Perhaps SVP and whoever the blonde chick is would be a good pair. I think it's probably easy for most of us to agree, however, that this isn't U.S. Open caliber stuff. The "Super Bowl" isn't where you conduct try outs.

Berman would probably be ok for the Phoenix Open, but not the US Open.

It would be like having McCord at the Masters. Most weeks, he's good. But he's not good for Augusta.

Miller is the best.

Johnny Miller is my favorite. I also love Faldo. Johnny Miller pisses some of the golfers off because he says negative things about them when they mess up a shot. Golf pros don't like hearing negative things because of their never ending desire to hear nothing but positive things. It's like when they look at a difficult shot, they always try to end their discussion with their caddy on a positive not; "good transition," "finish the swing," etc. Listen to their discussions; they always try to end on a positive note. You will never hear a caddy tell his golfer: "watch out for OB on the left," "make sure you get across the water," don't hit it right," "don't chunk it." These types of comments introduce a thought into a golfer's head that may not even have been there until someone said it. They simply don't want an announcer saying anything negative because they know that they may get asked about it later and that it now becomes a thought in their own head. The pros are very sensitive about what gets into their heads.

Johnny Miller "knows" what they are thinking and feeling and he tries to point that out to the viewer. I like that. I want to know what the golfer is thinking when he is under the gun. Johnny Miller has been there, dealt with it and been successful. He's just trying to make it a more enjoyable experience for the viewer.

I know that when I play, I have often hit a beautiful shot over a hazard and then watched someone else hit their ball into the hazard. They then go into complain mode and I realize that I wasn't even aware of the hazard when I hit my shot. I don't like someone to mention any obstacles just prior to me hitting my shot. I use to play with (used to being the operative words) a guy (I no longer refer to him as a friend) who didn't like me beating him. So he would comment on a hazard or a nearby OB stake or anything that might get me out of my rhythm. He especially liked to comment on how well I was playing. His comments appeared to be supportive, but they are really "dirty golf" as far as I am concerned. He would say things like "man, you are striping it today," or "boy you are really playing well today," or "Gilbert, you are having a terrific round." When I play, I never add my score until after 18. I don't want to know that I am having a good day or that if I par the last two holes, I can break 80. Invariably, if I worry about what I need to do in order to say, break 80, I bogey the last two holes.
