It's becoming more difficult to chair the USGA clubs and keep them in compliance. Here are some problem areas:

-Played with member box is checked by default
-Members List filtered for Scores w/other Members doesn't clear each season. You're essentially seeing any member who has ever played with another member
-Scores feed doesn't show which course the member played, just name and score. Now you must go through every score to see if the member played with someone.
-There's no simple way of knowing if a score was attested
-The option for removing players from club for no name, no zip code, etc is gone

The only one that I have a problem with is that the "played with a member" box is checked by default. None of the boxes should be checked by default. It would be nice that if a member played with another member and checked the that box, then the score would have to be attested by that member.

As for the option of removing players for no name, no zip code, etc, then put it in your By-Laws that it is required. If they don't do it, then they are in violation of your By-Laws, and there is an option for removing members for that reason.

It's never that simple. It's in the bylaws, but if people aren't going to read them, what's the point? Everytime I have a new member, I send a message letting them know that they need to play with another member as well as telling them to read the club bylaws so that they know their obligations. After they get removed for non-compliance, I still get messages asking 'why?'.

It's also in our bylaws that hole-by-hole scores should be used (so ESC can be applied). People don't do this 100% of the time.

You'd agree with my 2nd point if you had to worry about an offseason. Must be nice to play all year round.

The scores feed used to be nice and easy. If a few members played the same course, you could go to those scores to see if they played together.

As the judge says, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse!" The same applies to the By-Laws. Another old saying is "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink!" You can point out the By-Laws but you can't make them read them ... but that doesn't relieve them of abiding by them. If they ask why, you tell them why and that it is in the By-Laws. I had to remove just over 100 members last December for failure to play in a club event ... 70% of the membership.

I admit that it is difficult to track who played where ... and who says that if tow members played the same couse on the same day that they played together? They could have been there at different times. This is where the attesting comes into play ... and why Stracka should un-check that box by default and then ask who they played with so it would be easier to track.

I didn't say that they played together. But seeing the same course was played by 3 people on the same date, I can check those to see if they played together (email, attested, etc). The only info we get right now is name and score. That's not very helpful.

Agree on all counts- we need a better system for tracking compliance of club members. I'm also having a tough time getting enough members to show up for events. Question for other USGA chairman - how often do you "purge" your roster of non-compliant members? Every year - quarter - month - week?

Thanks,

Jason

Since we don't play all year around, I usually do it once or twice per year. I usually don't allow members to join in the off season either. I'll shoot them a message giving an explanation.
