What shafts do you play for your driver and fairway woods? Do you use the stock shaft that comes with the club, or do you upgrade to an aftermarket shaft? Which brands and models do you think are the best and why?

Personally, I think shafts are almost as important as the club head for distance and shot dispersion. A lot of the stock shafts that you buy with the club are complete junk. I've improved the performance of many clubs by 2-3 times just by installing a different shaft.

I currently play a TM R11 with either a Matrix Ozik XCON 6 or an UST Mamiya ATTAS T2. I also play the ATTAS T2 in my 3 wood, but I think I like the UST AXIVCore Black just as much. I have an XCON 7 in my 5 wood, and I bought a TM Rescue TP 3 hybrid with an XCON Altus shaft stock.

I have a Project-X 7A3, Tour Issue only on my R11 and Grafalloy ProLaunch Red's on my 3 & 5 metals. Need the high bend point to keep the ball flight lower--don't like the high launch~
The stock shafts that come on almost every club in a retail shop is nothing more than "Cookie-Cutter" shafts. For the average to below average golfer. DF, your 100% right, the shaft is as important if not more than the head itself.

If you were to compare a driver to a car then the shaft is the engine and the club head would be the body and the grip is the tires. If your grip is worn out then ypu lose traction. The club head is where you get the aerodynamics and the shaft is the engine. Not having the right shaft in your club is like having a 4 cylinder engine in a Corvette. It doesnt make any sense. If it is too stiff then you cant load the shaft and if it is too soft then it will send your ball straight into the air. The kick point would prolly be like adding an upgrade to the engine for optimal performance for the way that you drive.

Driver:

Titleist 909D2 9.5 w/Aldila Voodoo stiff

(one of their three factory shafts that's freaking AWESOME ... it lets me do everything I want including hitting low bullets into the wind)

3-wood:

Titleist 910Fd w/Diamana Kai'Li 75 stiff

(also a factory shaft and ashamedly not the full players' shaft, but it fits my game perfectly ... has enough flex to help get the ball in the air off the turf but is still stiff enough to let me hit hard low draws off the tee for distance)

Needless to say, I LOVE that Titleist has gone to the multi-options for shafts up front, so that you don't have to spend a fortune on a special-order shaft to get one you like. Obviously you can still do that if you want, but Titleist has been picking three different shafts as part of the standard factory setup for all their drivers/fairway woods, and their choices have been spot on for me.

I have a stock Aldilla / Voodoo in my Nike Str8 Fit 9.5 which I am happy with
as it didn't cost me an extra $300 bucks like the Matrix/Ozik shaft did 4 years ago.

I think the Matrix was a little better, but maybe not worth the added cost.

My friend who is a 2 Handicap swears by the new Cleveland 60 gram shafts that are out there.

Titleist 910 D3 w/ Mitsubishi ahina 80 X-stiff
Titleist 909 F2 w/ Aldila VooDoo Stiff. I keep the 3 wood as the one stiff shaft in my bag so I can work it.

Got an Aldila Voodoo (S-Flex) in my driver, cut down to 43". 3 wood has UST Proforce V2.

Whenever I get into some money (probably never) I want to get an nVentix Nunchuk for the driver.
