Why do people feel the need to wear golf attire when attending tournaments? I simply don't understand it.....saw guys and gals @ the PGA on Friday looking like they were ready to tee it up.....right down to their shoes.

I get that they are golfers by the fact that they are there....they don't need to prove how "serious" they are by dressing the part. It is not like someone is gonna come up and say "Hey, you look the part. Wanna tee it up?"

Me? I wore cargo shorts (for the extra pockets), dri-fit Cubbies shirt and a running hat (cooler and wicks perspiration better than a golf hat).

When I went to the Senior PGA this year, I noticed people weren't wearing golf attire(like polos or khakis. I had to though since I was a volunteer) and people also weren't wearing stuff like Broncos or Rockies shirts, but they would be wearing hats like that most of the time. It was usually just plain shirts without any words or designs that didn't have the polo type collars. I think a lot of this though just depends on where you are. If there was a tournament in New York like the US Opens at Bethpage, or if there was a tournament in say South Dakota, do you think there would be a difference in attire?

I went to a Champions Tour event a few years ago on a very hot day and chose to wear a nice t-shirt. The event took place on a private course and it was not an issue with anyone. I've worn a collared shirt at the other pro events I've been to. I've also wondered the same thing as you with gallery attire. I've never heard anything about standards for gallery attire. You probably can wear whatever, so long as no private parts are exposed. I dunno, maybe people want to fit in with the rest of the spectators.

I agree - dress for comfort especially the ones here where it's 100+ outside. I did hear where a lot of spectators at Whistling Straits were wearing golf shoes because of the terraine or something like that - it was pretty hard to get around some areas and the golf shoes help I guess.

Yeah, I heard that, txgal....apparently even the organizers suggested golf shoes. Dunno...not really buying it. I had no problem getting around in running shoes, even after the brief rain we had on Friday.

Since that was my first ever tournament, I have no reference point. So for those who have been to other events, do the spectators wear golf shoes as well, or was this a Straits-specific issue? I'd say close to 25% of the gallery had golf shoes on....

I rarely saw golf shoes at the few tourneys I've been to, probably less than 1%.

Some of us just prefer to wear better clothes on a golf course, whether we are playing or watching an event. When traipsing up and down hills, golf shoes with rubber spikes work better than most tennis shoes, particularly if the path has been trodden down and/or is wet.

Wear what you want to as long as it isn't offensive.
