distance difference

My driving isn't long but it's good enough for now. Usually, I'm around 230 or so with a 250 or 260 here and there. Nothing spectacular but okay distance. I was playing yesterday and figured I'd try a softer ball for more feel around the green. I felt like I was hitting normal tee shots and wind wasn't much of an issue. I noticed some drives I thought I hit pretty well were only going about 200-220 and some were sub 200. Is there really that much difference off the tee with a softer ball? I just didn't think you could lose that much distance by going softer. I was using a cheapy Noodle soft and really didn't put two and two together until well into the back nine. I'm not quite far along enough in my game to notice a huge difference in ball choice but this kind of stood out. For the record, it did seem like I hit more fairways.

I think so. I notice I get a lot more roll with the harder balls, compared to more bite with the softer ones.

According to the newest issue of Golf Digest there is very little differance in distance for all the balls on the market today. The biggest differance from ball to ball is the spin that they produce. Most of your high dollar balls produce more spin and the lower priced balls are distance balls, though there are some lower priced balls that spin very well but are not tour quality. From what I have read about Titlest balls, the differance between all of their balls is 4 yards. You might lose yardage with some balls but you will typically gain spin for better greenside control.

I actually had to go away from The ProV1 and ProV1x because I produce alot of spin with my swing and alot of my full shots would spin off the green. I went to the cheaper NXT Tour and my shots only spin back about 3 feet or so and my shots fly on a better path.

That makes sense. You are probably over compressing the softer ball with the driver.

When I switched from using a DT carry over to a scrixon soft feel I actually gained 15 yards. For me this actually came down to the fact that the DT tended to balloon off my driver where the soft feel tends to stay lower longer. I noticed the same behavior with the bridgestone E6 and srixon trispeed tour. Maybe the noodle just isnt for you?

I just switched from the low priced TM Burner to the TM Penta. I do notice a lot more control into the greens and more spin. Did not notice any difference in length off the tee.
My game is starting to improve to the point that I don't lose so many golf balls when playing a tight tree lined/house lined fairway, so I don't feel like I'm wasting money with the much higher priced ball. So far, so good. Will stay with it a while.
