shanking chips again

i tried to bring a chipping post back to the main page from bill321 but it didn't work. so, i figured i'd start a fresh one and any help would be great. everytime i think i put this problem behind me, it returns. i went to the range yesterday and started shanking chips again. it's worse with my SW than with my PW but it seems to come out of nowhere. am i not coming thru, standing too close to the ball, or just open at impact? it seems worse when i try and hinge my wrists to add a little height to the shot and i just seem out of control coming through. thanks in advance

The best way for us to see what is going on is for you to post a video of it so that we can try to determine what your problem is, rather than guess and completely mess you up!!!

Could be any or all of the reasons you had mentioned.

Try open your stance slightly, this is to bring your hip open to the target and pre-clear the hip to not crowding your arms to the core.

put the golf ball in the middle of the stance or slightly behind in the stance.

Keep swinging through the target line after impact. adjust as necessary.

Oh brother, I have had this problem. For me, it was simply a matter of not releasing the club fully through impact and making a good turn (the good turn being what helped me release the club fully).

I now know that if Im gonna hit a pitch with a 52, 56 or 60 degree that I need to trust the distance, fire away with a 3/4 to full swing, release and turn. If I try to back off, say because I have maybe a hair too much club for the distance, it'll shank every time. So If I have just a hair too much club for the distance, I choke down some on the club but make my 3/4 to full swing.

Chipping is probably the best part of my game. I have a chipping gren in the backyard and have spent countless hours hitting all types of chips.

What I found was the most consistent for my game is to play ball a little back of center in my stance. I also choke down on the club a bit and bend my knees considerably. I concentrate on keeping my knees bent through out the swing to make sure I dont "help" scoop the ball into the air, which never results in a good chip.

I do get a little handsy with my chips, but it is something that I became more comfortable with the more I practiced.

he best advise I can give you is : Practise, practice, and more practice!

this sounds like my problem. not committing and holding off. it seems to get worse with slightly bigger swings and occasionally shows up in pitch shots. never on a full iron or tee shot. i thought it was supposed to get easier as you got closer. this aspect of my game had improved and then it just seemed like i forgot how to do it. maybe it's just rust but man, it's embarassing.

Oops I'm confused are we talking chipping or pitching? I never shank chips, but pitches is what I was referring to.
If your shanking chips, use more club, almost a putting type of stroke, wrists firm all the way backswing and follow through, hands slightly ahead of the ball, make contact where ball meets the ground otherwise you'll chunk it or blade it.

keep it simple. shorten your back swing so you dont slow down before striking the ball.. the clubhead must be increasing speed at impact..
and second NO sneaking a peek.. keep your head still.
you got that shot have some faith and be agressive

it showed up when chipping but it happens at times when pitching too. i know what i'm supposed to do but am somehow pulling out of the shot or just being lazy

might have just been rusty and half-assing it. seems like i'm just not applying everything i know i'm supposed to do. thanks everyone, it's just weird this crap comes back and usually i don't have an answer for it.

Have you tried videotaping your chipping? If you don't have a video camera have someone use the video on your phone. It may help to see for yourself what you are doing.

the only other thing it can possibly be is your weight is not forward . your hanging back on your right foot.. often causes fat ones and skulls but if you stay forward keep a shorter backswing and dont peek your problem is GONE.. be agressive and attack the spot you want the ball to land.

If u r shanking the ball then u r prolly cutting accross the ball and hitting it off the inside of the club.
