In this month's episode of "Help me Egor" ..

This is Dustin's 1st full season playing golf. He started last fall and for his short time playing, is making good contact and has adapted his game to fit his swing.

That said, his swing is inconsistent. He played baseball in high school which is where I think several bad habits come from. He's 5' 4" and I've cut down his putter already, I think I need to cut his irons down by about 1.5" and take them to have the lie adjusted properly (they are AP2 714s).

There are several things sticking out to me - watch the video (set to HD and use space to play/pause through slow-mo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRMEDE..

- Left heel comes off the ground on backswing. I know some players do this and it's not a big deal, but i was taught to keep my left foot planted.
- Chest/head come up and away on backswing, left knee comes way out of position
- His entire upper torso comes to a crouch/squat on the downswing and his left toe starts to pivot on the heel toward the target
- Follow through includes the left foot/leg entirely out of place and balance

His ball almost always slices or even bananas - he's learned to aim left and does a decent job of hitting fairways or near fairways, but I can see a very out->in swing path and possibly an open face to cause this.

I've suggested lessons to help him and I suspect he will this fall when his school/work schedule is more consistent, but what can he practice in the mean time and what really needs corrected vs what is acceptable to leave as is?

Also - Dustin's position at impact, right shoulder dip, left shoulder very high.

For starters, all his weight is on his back foot and making him turn out of the swing with his left foot. That's also causing a slice. On the range, try having him take SLOW swings and remind him distance doesn't matter here. He needs to get the feeling of finishing on his left side and balanced. He looks like he's trying to crush the ball.

Years ago, I learned that taking a massive and powerful swing didn't get me any more distance than a nice smooth swing. Once he can get to swinging easy and finishing on his left side THEN he can work on increasing swing speed and power but he STILL needs to stay in balance and not fall out of the shot.

There's also a lot of sway all the way through the backswing and follow through. He needs to keep his head still and focus on turning is torso. Try having him swing with the sun at his back so he can see how much his head (and entire body) is moving.
