Golf-Science, Technology, Learning, and buying
Playing blades or cavity backs. This is coming from a person who play recreationally for the last 20 years with both products. The last 5 I started getting serious (this site helps a ton) and the in the last 18 months got REALLY SERIOUS. If you are going to go custom, and can dish out $450 to $1000 ish and you have the time, put the time into testing, learning the science and use the manufacturers, courses or retail stores for what will benefit you. It's your money and if they want your money, make them work for it. I have been to several Golf Galaxy stores and found one in Gurnee, IL where the 2 out of the 3 floor staff actually know what they are talking about and doing.
I spent 3 months testing over the winter 2008-2009, ON EVERYTHING. Swing speed, ball speed of Iron Vs Drvier, Lie agles, shaft weight, head weight, shaft flex AND kick (low, low-mid, mid, mid-high, etc). To shorten this and you live in an area near one of the manufacturers, GO TO THE SOURCE. If not then it would make a great vacation. What could be better. Call the manufacturer direct and go to their areas. That is a true custom fit. You would be amazzed at how fast you can reduce your handicap and shape your game if you know what each piece does. Each part has a reaction, Grip size and wrap, shaft dimension and characteristics, head characteristic, then the ball you use. If you want to get an idea of what I went through check my blog attached to my name. If you know the science you will KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT and that is when the tweaking works and is actually fun.!! Good luck and happy hunting.
