My birthday is coming up and wanted to give my wife some ideas. I was in the book store today and went to the golf section to get an idea of what I might want. I was wondering if anyone had any input on which golf book(s) to ask for. If you could give me a few ideas I'd appreciate it. I'm leaning towards history and legends of the game but books on the mental aspect and instructional books would be nice too. I have a few in mind but need some help. Basically, give me your must have golf books list. Thanks in advance.

2/12/2010 11:59:01 AM The Golfing Machine is a solid start. But you probably won't have the time to read anything else for a while. My must have is, the new Stack and Tilt book. There's a lot of very good info in there (even if you aren't considering a swing change). They've done a good job in cataloging the similarities in the best players as well as showing similarities in what makes a bad swing. |

2/11/2010 7:32:53 AM If people tell you to buy Five Lessons, make sure you also buy a follow up book called The Hogan Way- It adds and clears up a few things in Hogan's swing that was never covered in Five Lessons. Also, I highly recommend reading The Natural Golf Swing by George Knudson. This is how you should swing a club! Finally, for golf humor nobody does it better than Rick Reilly. Check out two of his hilarious works of fiction- Missing Links, and Shanks for Nothing. You can't go wrong with any of the books listed here. |

2/10/2010 2:23:11 PM I'll add my vote for any Pennick, Hogan, and Zen Golf books. I own 'em all. Tommy Armour's book makes a good contrast to Hogan's ideas. John Updike has a collection of his hilarious and insightful articles in print. Get you through the winter weeks we have left. |

9/17/2009 9:41:47 PM A few must reads that are yet to be mentioned: Golf is not a Game of Perfect Zen Golf (don't bother with the Zen Putting, no new info in my opinion) - and the last, out of fear of being highly ridiculed - How I Play Golf by Tiger Woods - he goes in depth on how he MENTALLY prepares for tournament golf. I play college golf, and we all know there is golf, and then there's tournament golf. I learned a lot from this book. I didn't really spend much time on other parts of the book, but the mental game knowledge shared is priceless. Just a few recommendations. |

9/16/2009 1:55:43 PM The Greatest Game Ever Played-Mark Frost.....Francis Ouimet beating the best golfers in the world in the 1913 US Open. It would be equal to a college player beating Tiger and Phil in a playoff on the Monday after Fathers Day. History of the day is the back drop for Quimet Vardon and Ray's lives. A great book. The Match-Mark Frost. Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson against the two best amateurs Ward and Venturi at Cypress Point. By the way, the match was set up by Eddie Lowrey-Quimet's caddie in 1913 A Gentleman's Game-Tom Coyne Fiction, A great read. The world of caddies and country club elite and how these worlds collide. |

9/15/2009 6:38:26 PM "Dr Divot's guide to golf injuries" (Larry Foster)... It's not a joke :) If you play a lot, you're bound to get injured and this is a great read! The book tells you all about golf injuries, how to prevent and treat them. I also like Jim Hardy's books, Bob Rotella's, Harvey Penick, Ben Hogan and Dave Pelz as others mentioned. I loved Mark Frost's novels ("The Greatest Game ever Played" and "The Grand Slam"). They are rivetting :) |

Here's a couple of other must reads: "Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible" - A must have!! "Harvey Penick's Little Red Book" - chock full of little tips that go a long way. "Golf Magazine - How To Hit Every Shot" - Good tips for tough lies. COme with a DVD. "Peak Performance Golf" by Patrick Cohn - Good for mental game and fitness tips. |
