First of all, I was raised in the coal fields of West Virginia. I grew up in Beckley, where my father was a miner. I grew up seeing him come home everyday, covered in coal dust and him coughing and gagging on it as well. The words of encouragement were to stay ion scholl and don't become someone like me. I did that and after 12 years of public school and 5 years of college. I graduated with a degree in business. As I grew up I moved to better my career to Charleston, West Virginia where I took a position as Asst. Store Manager. I found my wife shopping in my store one Saturday and 6 months we were married. All in all we were doing great, she worked for the state and I became a store manager with Hills Department Store. Built a home and raised our son, my step son. Then in 2004 I made a call to a old friend who was a District Manager for Ross Dress For Less. He was opening a store in Pinehurst, North Carolina and needed a manager for it. I jumped at the chance. HAve been in this area for now more than 3 years now and have played almost all 43 courses that you can play here. Talk about a piece of heaven. These are some of the greatest courses in the world, Pinehurst1-8, PineNeedles and Mid Pines to name a few. To think of all the times that as a young man in West Virginia, talking golf trips to Myrtle in the early days of April. I probably could have gotten a lot more for my money here than at the beach. The one down fall of this place is that there is basically no other things here than a few places to eat, a little bit of shopping but this place is golf. And thats it.
Pinehurst is like no other spot on this earth,43 top rated courses that are rated as high as 3 stars from golf digest. And about 16 to 20 of them 4 stars or better, maybe more if I took the time to actually count them.
Now you might ask yourself why is this slob telling me something I already know,, but till you actually experience this place, you will never know what golf is really about.
Day 2 of Living in a Dream Land
Enough of about me, this area is so rich in golf history. Pinehurst and Donald Ross go hand in hand. The tech that made such courses as Pinehurst 1,2,3, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Southern Pines. They have held two Open Championships, 1999 and 2005 and are on the books to have the 2014 Open as well. The only down side of this small town is that when it gets dark, they roll up the streets,LOL. Like I said earlier, this is a golf community, resort and retirement area. We have several nice hotels plus the resorts, Pinehurst, Mid Pines and Pine Needles Resorts. We also have town homes at Longleaf, The Pit, Talamore and many others as well. You can find much info at
And like I said there are 43 within 25 minutes, plus drive anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes and you could up the courses to about 20 more. Such as Anderson Creek, Bayonet at Puppy Creek, my favorite. Also you have Carolina Trace, Carolina Lakes and Tot Hill farm.
All of which are rated very high in Golf Digest rating system.
