Spend More Time Practicing Your Short Game
Updated: 10/19/2008 11:32:42 AM
We all know that 60% of the game is from 60 yards and in, but we don't spend a proportionate amount of our practice time working on our short games. We like to spend our time on the range working on our swings, hitting mid irons and drivers, and we then go to the putting green and hit putts for five minutes. I am just as guilty as anyone else, we think if we hit a few more greens we would score lower.

The reality is we have to learn how to get the ball in the hole in order to shoot good scores. I can't think of anyone that I teach that has a short game that is superior to their long game. This includes the college players that I teach. when we analyze their games honestly, the short game is usually what is keeping them from scoring like they want. Commit yourself to spend more time practicing your short game than your long game for a while, and see if your scores don't begin to drop.

I do have a putting mat which really helped me last winter. Now it's only 6 feet long and I love practicing long breaking putts... If I had a heated greenhouse in the backyard, I could have a putting green in there... Sigh ;)

Definitely agree :) I divide my practice sessions in three: 30-45 minutes for putting, 30-45 minutes for chipping and pitching and then 30-60 minutes for long game. Now it's really difficult to find a golf club or practice range with a good short game practice area. I have to drive 30 minutes from home to get to a decent facility. And I'm still wondering how to effectively practice my putting and short game during the winter...
