As a baseball fan, last night was one of those sit back and wait to be amazed nights as we watched two of the biggest collapses in baseball history.

Boston and St. Louis were up by 9 and 8 1/2 games, respectively, at the beginning of the month in the wild Card race and pretty much had it in the bag.  What happens next?  Boston's starting rotation and Atlanta's offense seemed to take an early vacation as they were no where to be seen.  Meanwhile, Tampa and St. Louis are picking up steam and winning games left and right which lead  to last night scenarios.

Before the games started, Boston and Tampa were tied for the AL Wild Card.  If one won and the other lost, the winner was in... if they tied they would have a one game playoff today.  Boston was up 3-2 against the O's heading into the bottom of the 9th with their "once ace" Papelbon on the hill.  After striking out the first two batters, destruction began: double, double (1 run scores), walk-off single (game over).  Now, all they could do is hope for Tampa to lose so they can play today for a one-game playoff.

By the time this happened, the Rays were tied with the Yankees 7 - 7 in the bottom of the 12th as they came back from being down 7- 0 in the 8th.  3 minutes after Boston lost and were in the clubhouse, they turned on the tv only to watch Evan Longorio hit a walk-off dinger into left field to win the game.  Tampa out... Boston in!

The NL Wild Card wasn't as dramatic as an ending as St. Louis crushed the Astros 8- 0 and Atlanta ended their September downward slide by losing to the Philly's 4-3.  Still, the games meant everything especially since Atlanta had an 8 1/2 game lead just 4 weeks ago and just couldn't hold on.

What other last-day-of-the-season events had so much riding on this many games and were this exciting to watch?  Granted, this is only for the Wild Card, but once the post-season starts all that matters is who's hot and the Rays and Cards are hot right now.
