For those of you that have not played at Boscobel Golf Club in Pendleton, SC... It is a 70.7 Rating with a 125 slope. Today, I went back to the place I worked for six months at. For those who have never been there, if you go to play in the afternoon at this semi-private golf course anyday between Monday and Friday, you can play all you want for 24 bucks! Course is in great shape minus the rough. The greens are in great shape as usuall.
So today, I played with a friend of mine. We paid our 24 bucks and went on. We ended up shooting 84 (me) and 82 (him) in the first round we played.
During that round I had this:
29 putts
GIR: 4/18
FIR: 5/13
3/10 Up&Down
Chip in Par at 13
2 birdies
6 bogeys
3 double-bogeys
1 triple-bogey
So depsite some a few bad things, I still overcame and made the best of the round.
Now.. In the 2nd round we played, my friend shot 80, and so did I.
In that round I did this:
28 putts
GIR: 6/18
FIR: 5/13
5/10 Up&Down
2 birdies
7 bogeys
2 double-bogey
** I birdied the same two holes consecutive two rounds in a row! (15, 16)
Here are some things you need to know that made the 2nd round a better round:
- The first round, through 13 holes, we realized due to humidity the ball would not curve as much. This my normal hard draw and fade a baby draw and baby fade. (This allowed us for the 2nd round to take more aggressive lines.)
- I hit 2 more greens, and my misses werent bad, as well as the fariways I missed.
- I was 1 putt better.
- 1st round I didn't hit a bunker, but the 2nd round I did (sandy par!) (This wouldn't happen if I didn't give myself over to control)
- I was able to work the ball either way for the last 27 holes. (Again...wouldn't happen if I didn't give myself over to control.
** I played the Nike ONE Tour D instead of the ONE Tour, because if you get too much spin on some of those greens, they will spin off.
So once again, the key to having better rounds is to control your swing, and work the ball. I actually drove 10 - 15 yards better than yesterday for the entire day.
Reason why?
Confidence in control and workability. I sliced one drive, because I set up a little far away from the ball and I was reaching the entire way (cough, cough double-bogey on 5 first round)
I also hit outbounds each round on #9 twice over swinging at the ball (Par 4, Driveable 280 up-hill. Plays 290-315 front to back.)
So the lesson of the round was two things.
1) Over-swinging will cause alot less control and your scores go up.
2) Though not mentioned, I only had one time where I had to loft a shot off the green for an up & down. I mainly chipped for good leave spots due to good control.
So, give yourself some control and play better golf.
