Control Vs. Power

Lately, I have finally been able to "set myself to reality" and go for more control, instead of the "power it all" mentality.

First of all, so everyone knows, I am 6'3" 280. So, being that big and had played football and worked out alot prior to playing golf was part of the pain of trying not to go for power. I picked up golf after I decided I wanted to do something other than lay around after work. A year and a half later, it seems that I have finally conquered the "power demon" within me.

I will now layout a chart of my distances for when I was power hungry:

9.5 Driver - 240 - 250 Carry, 270 - 295 Total
15 3 Wood - 220 - 230 Carry, 240 - 250 Total
22 4 Iron - 212 Carry
25 5 Iron - 200 Carry
29 6 Iron - 188 Carry
33 7 Iron - 176 Carry
37 8 Iron - 164 Carry
41 9 Iron - 152 Carry
46 PW - 140 Carry
52 GW - 115 Carry
56 SW - 100 Carry
60 LW - 80 Carry

** I did not own a hybrid before I charted my distances.

Here are my yardages after I finally got into the control swing of things:

9.5 Driver - 240 - 250 Carry, 270 - 295 Total
15 3 Wood - 220 - 230 Carry, 240 - 250 Total
19 3i Hybrid - 207 - 215 Carry , 220 - 230 Total.
22 4 Iron - 196 Carry
25 5 Iron - 185 Carry
29 6 Iron - 174 Carry
33 7 Iron - 163 Carry
37 8 Iron - 152 Carry
41 9 Iron - 141 Carry
46 PW - 130 Carry
52 GW - 100 Carry
56 SW - 80 Carry
60 LW - 60 Carry

You will notice that the driver and 3 wood are the same. That is because I never over swing those clubs. When I do I slice, so that tamed me from over swinging.

It's great to know that on a par 3, that if I am having trouble with my mid  or higher irons, I can bare back and hammer down. But, what good is that? Maybe fine for a long 9 or 8 iron, but I couldnt control anything else.

So why even bother with power if you can't control it?

I control everything much better now. I never fade unless I need to. I can hit it down the middle, I can draw it as well. Controling your swing is the key in everything. When you can do that, you will be playing better golf.

I hit my 3 wood 265 a couple of times today. I have been really clearing my hips lately for my longer clubs.

When I play, I'm trying to hit the ball as hard as I can WITHOUT COMPROMISING MY BALANCE & POSTURE. You'll never hit it out of your shadow when you say "swing easy." Better to say "swing smoothly."

That is also great that you can now start to work the ball...now you just have to work on the whole scoring game, which is a different animal entirely!

Lastly, I'll just say those are some STRONG lofts on your irons! On my old Hogan Redlines that I sometimes play, my 1-iron is the loft of your 3-hybrid. My PW is your GW!

I think the only thing I don't like is the wedges. I like to hit wedges hard. You will notice that your wedge yardages are a bit more even when you were swinging harder. A 80 SW seems like you are only doing a 3/4 swing or something. You have a 30 yard gap between GW and PW. I swing nice and easy with every club. But I mentally think of a firmer swing when I get wedges in my hands. I hit my 3 iron 225, but when I stand at address I am thinking 140 yards. It keeps me from over swinging. My shot is more accurate and longer. This approach never worked with my wedges though, because they are more precision clubs. I always get a firm distance in my mind and swing to it. Do what works though. Everyone is different.

I like your yardages better now than with you overpowering the ball.

When I have warmed up pretty well, I hit my irons about 8 yards further and my wedges.
