Alright, so I embellished a bit.. To say Orlando Golf Blogger was featured isn’t entirely accurate, but it’s writer was!
A couple months back I wrote about Orange County National’s Ryder Cup event. This was a single day event that pitted 16 of United Kingdom’s finest soldiers from 1st Bn Coldstream Guards against 16 local Orlando golfers.
It was a single day event and the format was two-man better ball match play with 100% handicaps, playing off the lowest handicap in the group.
Three points are awarded per foursome, one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point for the overall.
It was a fantastic event and we had a blast getting to known the troops who recently returned from an Afghanistan deployment.
Being the creative marketing genius that I am (hehe), I contacted Golf Digest to try and get their “ambush” team to attend and document the event and feature it as their next Ambush article.
For those who don’t know, Golf Digest does these Ambush events where folks submit information on their golf outings and if your outing is selected, they come out, cover the event and feature you and your group in the magazine. Many moons ago, I wrote a post on one of these events, the ambush of the O’toole Brothers Showdown. Their annual outing took place at Hunters Creek Golf Club, my “home” course.
The ambush team didn’t contact me prior to the event, so I figured it was a no go. Much to my pleasant surprise, Matt Ginella, who, by the way, writes some really solid stuff, shot me an email and mentioned they wanted to write up the Ryder Cup event in one of their upcoming issues!
They’ve expanded the section to include a quarterly excerpt of events that they wanted to ambush, but couldn’t for one reason or another.
In the January 2011 issue (page 69) of Golf Digest the OCN Ryder Cup event got some page time and everyone’s favorite golf blogger was quoted, mostly accurately, numerous times throughout the write-up!
Unfortunately, they weren’t able to work in the website and yes, push for it, figured a little self promo never hurt anyone, but it’s still pretty awesome to see your name in a national publication!
You can read the article below.
Thanks to my good buddy Tom Hoyt, who was recently down in O-town for his annual golf trip for alerting me to the Golf Digest article.
