I am surprised by the venom I see being expressed against Ian Poulter. What is going on with Poulter. I am a big time golf fan and follow all the tours. I religiously watch golf tournaments and a lot of the shows on the golf channel. I have never seen Ian Poulter do or say anything that deserves the venom I am seeing against him. Every time I have seen him on a show, he has been polite and very entertaining. I have never seen him do or say anything negative against another player. He has never been arrogant that I've seen. Yes, he exudes confidence. but if he didn't, he wouldn't last long on tour. Professional golfers play at such a level that they look to focus every fiber of their skills, ability and mind on scoring as low as possible. That's why they seek out sports psychologists. They learn to never think negative and never consider that anyone else can beat them or is better than themselves. They also have to tread a fine line between that confidence and not offend anyone, especially a fan. Apparently Poulter did or said something that I am unaware of.
What's up with the negative comments?

12/5/2010 11:16:07 AM I don't hate him (but then I don't hate anyone) but he is right on the fence of taking it a step too far. He is a loud dresser and yes so was Payne Stewart. But you wouldn't find Paybe with his own self promoting TV show on Golf Channel nor would he be flipping the bird to the gallery or mouthing off about how good he thinks he is. There are lots of Euro's that appear to be OK guys (Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Paul Casey come to mind.) Ian just has that nobody can play in my ballpark attitude about him, an American can spot that and it doesn't take much to piss us off and form an opinion about someone. I am sure they do the same in Europe. That is what lends interest to the Ryder Cup. It is not Tiger against Graeme, or Phil against Rory, it is US vs EURO. |

12/5/2010 9:53:24 AM i like Poulter. it's funny how he's an act and flips somebody off or runs his mouth a little and his behavior rubs some people the wrong way then they defend Tiger because he has won a lot. yeah, Tiger is genuine. there are a lot of good young players on the tour that play well and have style and are an alternative if you don't worship Tiger. it's nice to see Tiger playing well because he raises the level of competition and is still the one everyone wants to beat. everyone always plays the "yeah, but he doesn't have 14 majors card". last time i checked, nobody does. oh wait, except one guy( Mr. Nicklaus ). Phil is the next best on tour with 4 and there are 3 others with 3. apparently you have to win multiple majors to be quotable and have an opinion. if i wanted to root for someone boring, i'd root for Stricker or someone else with half a pulse |

12/4/2010 6:30:44 PM I fail to see what all the negative comments have been. It seems to me I've read more negative comments on Tiger than on Poulter. It certainly doesn't appear to me that jumping up on a soapbox to defend him is in any way justified. Lighten up. The guy's alright, but he's just as entitled to being disliked by fans as anybody else is. |

12/3/2010 6:24:40 PM You weren't around when Poulter told the world he and Tiger would be beating everybody? And besides that, the guy has a headcover OF HIMSELF!!! What kind of douchebag has a headcover of himself? There is a HUGE difference between confidence and arrogance. Telling the world how great you are is not confidence; that's arrogance. Poulter's all mouth and no heart ... when he sacks up and wins a major and then another major, I'll reconsider my stance on him. Until then, he's nothing but a peacock who can't back up his mouth. Hell for me would be forced to sit in a room with only a single computer locked onto that idiots' Twitter feed 24/7. I'd be willing to bet that guy pops off about how great he is weekly ... and I bet his Sunday night excuses for failing to win yet another major are priceless. |

12/3/2010 6:01:33 PM It seems like a lot of you guys favor style over substance. When did looking good start to outweigh winning tournaments? I think a lot of these modern players could really care less about winning as long as the money keeps pouring in. |

12/3/2010 5:56:56 PM where to start... 1. At this years Waste Management Open at TPC Scottsdale he gave a not so subtle middle finger to the crowd at 16. Several golfers were booed at this hole, yet he was the only one who acted like a complete douche. 2. The guy is obviously talented, however if he spent as much time on his golf game as he did on his fashion line he might have more than 1 win on tour. Stop being more like a Kardashian and start being more like a Nicklaus. 3. He struts around like cock of the walk yet only has 1 freaking win in 5 years on tour. And I could really care less about any wins on the Euro tour. I do not believe all this hype about how great the European tour is. It is a distant 2nd to the US tour. The only reason guys like Kaymer and McIlroy are opting to play over there is economics: a) they get massive appearance fees to play over there and b) they are more likley to finish higher over there since it is a watered down tour. If the European tour was so great how come you don't see a bunch of American guys going over there the way international players come here? But I. Digress, Poulter does not have the wins to back up all his ridiculous "me and Tiger" type claims. 4. He's European. You may have guessed that I'm not as enamored with the European players or tour as the media and others are. I don't particularly care for Phil Mickelson either but I would kiss him on the mouth if it meant him or any other American would win a tournament instead of a foreigner. |

12/3/2010 3:56:16 PM Ian Poulter, the person, doesn't offend me.... Ian Poulter, the fashion abomination, DOES!!! He has to be blind as a bat, because if he could look in a mirrour and be HAPPY with the way he looks, he is either high, stoned, and/or drunk. No other explanation! LOL |
