Here we go again. So Saturday, Julie Inkster was waiting on the tee to play a hole while there was a backup on a par-5. After waiting about 30 minutes, she apparently became a little stiff and decided to loosen up by swinging a club. She attached a weighted donut to her club while swinging which is against the rules. Rule 14.3 specifically prohibits you from using any artificial device that might assist you in making a stroke. The weighted donut was a violation of rule 14.3, the penalty for which is disqualification. The officials looked at the video, did see the weighted donut and decided to ask Julie Inkster about the incident when she completed her round. (She was on hole 17 when the officials were notified by an email and decided to let her complete her round.) After her round, she was asked about the incident and freely admitted that had indeed used a weighted donut and apparently was unaware of the rule. Or maybe she simply forgot about the rule. The upshot is that she was disqualified. This ruling was very unfortunate for Julie because at the time she was eight under par and within one or two strokes of the lead. Once again, we have a professional golfer that was not aware enough of the rules of golf.
Any comments on this one????

8/23/2010 10:43:23 AM What if PGA didn't tell Dustin Johnson that he "grounded" his club, and Nick Watney went ahead and signed his card. WHAM... They both would of suffered the penalty. If replay is going to be used, then do it after scorecards are signed. This will make the other golfers be more aware, alert, and attentive to there other players in the group. |

8/23/2010 10:40:43 AM Here is the kicker.. I am finding out that the PGA basicaly is going to instant replay. No longer do you see 1 calling a penalty on 1's self, or the other golfer in the group calling out a violation. Rules are rules, but so far.. Dustin Johnson, Julie Inkster, Michelle Wie, Anthony Kim were all called out on something due to a "replay" type thing. Not that I care, but it seems that type of notion is whats leading to the golfers not being "sharp" with the rules. They are not watching the others, and keeping there minds sharp on all of the rules. They are relying on PGA replay to call a violation on another person, or relying on the other golfer to call on themselves. I am always "hawking" my playing partner to make sure he don't break rules, or better yet, help him learn the rules. |
