I'm about to get some new irons and i think i'm going to get Adams A3 OS Boxer steel irons or callaways X20 steel irons. I like the A3 OS because the 3,4,5 are hybrids. As anyone played any of this clubs?

8/19/2010 9:05:00 PM I agree with the person that suggested finding clubs that you hit better by going to Golfsmith or another shop with a variety of clubs. A few years ago, I did a demo day with Taylor Made because I had a particular line I was interested in. After hitting several clubs they found the set that I hit best for my swing, checked what the lie angle needed to be to ensure good level contact. It was one of the best decisions I have made as far as equiptment to this point, because the set I was interested in was much more expensive and I hit them lousy. |

8/18/2010 9:34:54 PM Don't go to the store for a particular set of clubs. Check out several different brands on the machine and choose the set that gives you the best performance. You might be surprised what you end up with. A couple of years ago I went to Golfsmith to buy the new driver that Phil was hitting at the time (I forget the brand now, maybe Callaway). I had played with people that were using that driver and liked how people hit it and the sound it made. I went to Golfsmith and I hit that driver and several others on the machine. I left with a Ping G10. The G10 seemed to give me the best performance in terms of distance, ball flight and feel. There was a very helpful fellow at the Westheimer store here in Houston. He spent a lot of time with me helping test drivers. Earlier this year I bought new irons. Over a period of several weeks I went to Golfsmith and hit several different brands of irons on their machine. The set I decided on was Mizuno MP58's. I also liked the other forged Mizuno clubs but I decided that the MP58's gave me the best performance. Again, the fellow at Golfsmith was very helpful and spent quite a bit of time with me. He changed club heads and shafts for me so I got to try several different combinations of shafts and heads. Anyway, the lesson I learned is to try different clubs and see which ones perform best for your particular swing. Golfsmith also has a very nice deal where they will give you a 90% refund within 30 days (I think) if you decide to return them and try another set. You can't get a better deal than that. You get to try them out for 30 days and return them for 10% of the price. Having said all that, the next set of irons I buy I am going to spring for a fitting session with a professional. It may cost me a lot more money (maybe $100 to $150) but hopefully I get the best set that fits me and that decision is made with the help of a professional. If you can afford it now you may want to consider that option as well. |

8/18/2010 4:24:27 PM If you havent hit a hybrid before, try and find one you can hit. I cant stand them, though I can hit them halfway decent, the feel is awful IMO. As you know, new clubs arent going to lower your scores any though. I have consistently been getting better and I am rocking a set of 13 year old Tommy Armour 855s.. |
