I love to play in singles golf tournaments. I used to be a member of the Houston Amateur Golf Association and played in an individuals tournament every two weeks. I had a great time because of the way that the HAGA ran their tournaments. They were sticklers for playing by the rules, speeding up play and policing sandbaggers. I constantly look for singles tournaments to enter but they are virtually non-existent anymore. I look for tournaments that are on Saturday because I go to church on Sunday and theyhave to be committed to playing by the rules. The Saturday play provision is why I no longer play in the HAGA tournaments. The HAGA had to play on Sunday because they won't get any participants on Saturday. I refuse to play in scrambles because an honest player doesn't have a chance. Either players show up with hand-picked teams or teams have players with 18-handicaps that drive the ball 280 consistently and have virtually flaw-less swings. I do play in two scramble tournaments a year; the "Be an Angel" tournament sponsored by Dan Patrick of KSEV radio and my church's tournament that supports our troops. Other than that, I basically don't get to play in tournaments anymore. I believe that you will enjoy golf much more when you compete in a singles golf tournament and actually win when playing by the rules. Any thoughts? How do each of you find a venue to challenge yourself?
