I was looking around the GolfQ site looking at the tournament entries and noticed something interesting. When GolfQ started the "Virtual" tournaments, the "free" tournaments were "selling out" like a Lady Gaga Concert. But the couple of tournaments that required an entry fee were unsold. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the virtual tournaments do not require you to do anything special. All you have to do is play your regular round of golf at your regular course and post the score. I find it sad that so few players are willing to challenge themselves and enter tournaments where you have to actually play at a course that may not be your regular course and play face to face against your opponents. It makes a huge difference in your level of nervousness when you have to compete against someone that you've never met and maybe someone that is a whole lot better than you are. But that is how you become a better player. You play against guys that are better, hit it farther, have better short games, are younger or older, some are assholes; in short, it takes you out of your comfort zone. These were just some thoughts I had about the virtual tournaments. I'll probably only play in a couple more because I don't see the challenge without my opponent playing along with me.

8/14/2010 9:28:54 AM I try and play with a variety of players. Many are better players than me but it's where I learn the most and always take something new away from the round. I would jump at the chance to play in a tournament. |

8/13/2010 9:09:02 PM I would be glad to enter real tournaments. That is why I just joined the Harris Teeter Tour here in North Caroilina. But there are NO real tournaments to play in in my area (two hours driving from North Durham). I suspect that is the case with most vTournament players who do not play tournaments in their area. There simply aren't any. |

8/13/2010 6:37:49 AM The problem with the virtual tourneys is there is a time frame to play your round.....Is everyone picking a round they are going to count for the toruney before they go? I don't think so...If they play bad they are just going to play again until they get a good score and POST that....You should have to send a message within 24 hours before your tee time saying that you are playing XYZ Course then post your round for the tourney. That would be better.... |

8/12/2010 11:15:10 PM You wanna come play a match in VA.? I got a no-limit wager mentality but a high limit in the distance I can travel. I have a wife and three children. You feel free to "come challenge yourself" on a course that is out of your norm. I have over twenty championship courses within driving distance and will challenge you on any of them.(please bring cash only).-----Scott |

8/12/2010 5:30:22 PM Or maybe it's simply someone doesn't want to pay an entry fee or they play golf for a different reason, or no tournaments in the there area. It can't all be that everyone is a sandbagger or uninspired to challenge themselves |

8/11/2010 4:58:58 PM A few people already hit the nail on the head... the ones that are paid but you can play any course, you have sandbagging issues and the ones that are specifically at XYZ Course are in Texas, Arizona, et cetera. I've yet to see one within 5 hours of Michigan... |

8/11/2010 1:16:09 PM I for one am of a different mind--I will play in every tournament I can find, money or not. Problem is there aren't many around where I live right now. When I lived in NC I was a member of the Amateur Golf Tour and we played a tournament every weekend that cost money to enter and I played in the World Am at Myrtle beach for a few years. Economy and area are determining my golf right now and I have signed up for a few of the virtual tours but looking at the posted scores makes me wonder about the sandbagging and score attesting. How is it that these guys shoot the round of their life when entered and I see a huge range of handicaps within the same flight? |

8/11/2010 12:28:59 PM Was your title a play on words or accidental!? Texas seems to be the popular spot for the Tourneys that cost money. How do you know people aren't playing their own local tourneys that aren't affiliated with Stracka? And I agree with 72Wannabee, people are shooting the rounds of their lives for these things. Plus, it isn't very well organized. World Class B had to be pulled because it was flighted wrong. Many of them have 2 flights and should have had more. I'm a 34.something and there are 12 or 13 h/cs in my flight. People are winning multiple Qualifiers. Seems like if you win one, then you should not be able to enter any others. Any other wins after the initial one and second place should get it. Or they register for the same qualifier multiple times. Heck, next time I'll register for all 36 spots in a qualifier. So would I spend money on a tourney knowing that the same people that run these free ones run those as well? Not until they are in my area, and not until they are done a little better. This is not a knock on Stracka, there are always growing pains when starting something new. |

8/11/2010 9:26:19 AM I would like to play in those tournaments if 1 they were in my area and 2 I wouldn't be so concerned with saving money. |

8/11/2010 12:13:04 AM Just because the virtual tournaments are filling up it does not follow that people on this board aren't "willing to challenge themselves and enter tournaments where you have to actually play at a course that may not be your regular course and play face to face against your opponents." I've played in twelve such tournaments so far this year, but none of them are golf.com tournaments (in part because our local club hasn't held any tournaments). |

8/10/2010 9:37:53 PM and maybe it as to do with the sandbagging that is going on and/or the false attesting of scores...why spend your money is those exist...that's the problem with a virtual tour. |
