Since I moved from the UK to the US I have been making do with a Wilson starter set (Deep Red).  I have gradually replaced the clubs a few at a time. The putter was the first to go, then the driver.  I replaced the wedges earlier this year but was still sticking with the Wilson Deep Red irons.

Then at TopGolf last week I tried out my buddy's TaylorMade r7 CGB Max irons.  Holy smoke!  From hitting inconsistent strikes that sprayed randomly over the range, suddenly I was smacking them high and straight, shot after shot after shot.  I was absolutely stunned that clubs could make such a difference.  So I have spent a high proportion of the last week or so at w*rk surfing golf equipment review sites, golf retailers' websites, eBay etc.  You know the deal - I'm sure you all do the same thing!!  The CGB Maxes (steel shaft) still retail for $900+ in spite of the fact that they are a model that has been around a couple of years.  Even used sets on eBay rarely sell for less than $500, and they are supposedly one of the sets most likely to be knock-offs so I didn't want to tangle with that.

So I started looking for lower-budget options and discovered that all the big retailers are selling off final stocks of their steel r7 irons for $299.  99% of the reviews sang these clubs' praises to the skies so I went to Golf Galaxy yesterday, hit a few on the launch monitor and walked away with a shiny new set.  Went straight to TopGolf to hit a couple of baskets and am now clock-watching until the weekend gets here...!
