Watching the Sony Open on the Golf Channel I saw where John Daly has three Ping Eye 2 wedges in his bag this year....these wedges have the old square grooves in them. Because of a "loophole" these wedges are legal despite the intent to eliminate square grooves. These clubs were grandfathered in back in 1999 I think and because the golf rules allowed them the current groove rules don't apply to them.
So, knowing there will be many on both sides of this issue....where do you stand? Do you think it's not an issue since they are, after all is said, legal clubs. Or, do you think using them is breaking the "spirit" of the recent groove rules?
What do I think? I wouldn't use the clubs. But I do believe a golfer does have the right to do so.

2/11/2010 8:28:16 PM for dakotajones...Ping Golf may respond but Karsten will not as he passed in 2000. The PGA stated last week that they knew a year ago the Ping clubs would be legal under the new groove ruling. They 'assumed' players would not use 20 year old clubs. They were incorrect. The clubs are completely legal and the prior knowledge and decision admitted by the ruling body should minimize the 'spirit of the rules' discussion. Scott Mccarron has not displayed the skill set needed to be on the Player Advisory Committee. Hopefully he will be replaced next year. Hit 'em straight and hit 'em long....but mostly get out & hit 'em! |

2/10/2010 9:55:33 AM As far as I cam concerned, any issues on the tour are self inflicted. If the grooves allow someone to spin one onto the green from the rough, then maybe the rough should be rougher. If the issue is someone sending one rocketing off the tee at 300 yards plus, maybe the solution is to select courses where shot making and course management are the keys to winning. |

2/9/2010 4:11:33 PM If you like the clubs, play them. The USGA accepted the clubs and has done nothing to fix the loophole until players pulled them out of the basement and started to play them again. When a reasonable agreement is reached to make them illegal, then everyone can stop complaining. |

2/8/2010 3:29:26 PM I think the fact that Solheim sued the USGA in the first place is a joke. Someone has to make the rules and that "someone" comes in the form of the USGA and the R&A. That lawsuit should have been thrown out of court before it even got there and the USGA should have woken up and realized that they really need to think things through before they pull the trigger. But if some jackass named Solheim gets his feelings hurt over a groove issue, who really cares? All clubs should conform to the same standards: the standards set by the governing bodies of golf. Last time I checked, the Solheim manufacturing company was not a ruling body of golf. If I ruled the world, I'd ban PING equipment on every tour just out of spite. A slap in the face to the Solheim family for biting the hand that feeds. To this day, I won't play Ping clubs because of that lawsuit. Do I think these guys are cheating? No. It's within the rules. But these clubs should not be allowed out there. |

2/7/2010 12:44:05 PM KARSTEN SOLHEIM SHOULD ALLOW THE RULE TO BE CHANGED ALLOWING THE PGA TOUR TO BAN THE USE OF THE PING EYE 2 IT WOULD ONLY HELP THE INTEGRITY OF THE AWESOME SPORT WE CALL GOLF I HATE PEOPLE THAT TRY TO "CHEAT WITHIN THE LIMITS" I RESPECTED PHIL JOHN D.J. BUT THIS CAN'T GO ON ANY LONGER IT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF BOWLING WHERE ALL BOWLERS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO THROW A PLASTIC BALL BUT ONE BOWLER GETS AWAY WITH THE PARTICLE BALL JUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T WAN'T THE COMPANY TO SUE THEM |

2/6/2010 6:13:15 PM I don't agree with guy's using them but I understand it is within the rules! I think they should drop the rule change because it doesn't make sense anymore. If guy's can use these clubs then why have the rule change in the first place. Pro golfers should be on an equal footing. Either everyone uses them or no one. |

2/5/2010 9:46:44 AM McCarron calling guys using the Ping Eye2 wedges cheaters, hell of a statement coming from a guy using a broomstick putter. The long putters should have been made illegal long before square grooves! |

2/4/2010 11:43:19 AM When I golf, I use the rules of the game provided to me. I will use the equipment that will make me the best I can be. The "Intent" of a Rule is great when your playing for fun, but when your playing for your income and the equipment is "Legal" regardless of intent, it's still legal. I've looked at some of the rules the PGA has for how to play the game and some are very odd to me, I don't know the intent, but I play the way it reads. If I have the advantage of length and can play a 3 iron, but my competitor must use a hybrid to equal me, should I be mad about that or accept it as a rule of golf? This groove rule and Ping Eye 2 thing is like taxes, I'm going to pay my share, but I'm certainly going to find every "legal" method of decreasing it that I can. If you choose to pay more, and not take advantage of the rules, that's your fault. |

2/3/2010 12:17:03 AM I understand the reason its legal (lawyers) but I don't think it's right and neither does Lefty even though he has the right due to the loophole. But all it does is get more buying the eye2's. Just think its wrong. So I agree with following the spirit of the rule. Kind of like its okay to speed as long as you stay within 5 mph or for many as long as they aren't caught its okay.JM2C |

2/2/2010 1:11:11 PM I think it definitely goes against the spirit of the rule and with golf being a gentlemen's game, while it's not cheating technically, it is cheating the spirit of the game. But what do you expect from Phil. |
