It's the story of a regular guy, not very talented, who has set a goal for himself: becoming a scratch golfer... and participate in the Masters (now he's dreaming on this one!)
He's currently a 22-handicap and plans on playing and practicing several times a week to reach scratch player level by mid-2011. It's going to be interesting to follow, although I think that one year and a half to go from 22 to scratch is awfully short. Plus he can't pay to have a golf instructor.
He put together a blog that you can access here: http://mygreenjacket.com/wordpress/
It's going to be interesting to see how much he can lower his handicap by putting in a lot of play and practice. I suspect he might reach a 10 handicap, but I don't think he can reach scratch in such a short period of time. What do you think?

12/16/2009 6:07:31 PM I didn't see this guys age. Does anyone know. This is an unreachable dream, first he would have to win the U.S. or British Amateur championship. or P.G.A. event to play in the Masters. Can't happen in two years. |

12/15/2009 8:00:15 PM In 2 1/2 years I went from about a 22 to a 10 handicap. Range once or twice a week and one round. Three lessons from a Pro. If this gut is serious I can see him getting single digit maybe even low single digit but I highly doubt he'll be scratch. As far as the masters or pro golf forget about it. It won't happen, at least in the time frame he set. Actually it reminds me of a book I read about a guy who was a college golfer with some tallent to start with and his quest to make the Pros. He dedicated a year of his life to it and in the end............well I won't spoil it. The book is called, "Paper Tiger" by Tom Coyne and I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it and if you're into golf its a good read. |

12/15/2009 9:31:38 AM These days, you really need to hit the ball pretty long in order to succeed at Augusta. The course measures 7,445 yards. I think the course rating and slope are something like 74/140 or something. Lots of very long par 4s on the course--you have to be able to hit high long iron shots that can stop on their icy-slick greens, which probably roll a 12 or 13 on the stimp. The course he's playing is measured in meters, but it's still short compared to Augusta. I did the calculations, and his course is about 6505 yds. That's still nearly 1000 yards shorter than Augusta. He's just not going to get to practice the same kind of shots as he would need call upon at Augusta. I'm not a long hitter by pro standards, but I get the ball out there, and I've played courses of 6500 yards and almost NEVER have more than a 6 iron into any green. That don't happen at Augusta...I would be hitting fairway woods and long irons into most of their greens, and frankly, I can't do that all day. My last concern for the guy is that you can't qualify for the Masters...you have to be invited. You have to win a tournament of the PGA Tour, or be in the top of the money list on the European Tour, win the US Amateur or Mid-Amateur, maybe the British Amateur (though I'm not sure of that), just to get an invitation. Achieving one of those goals doesn't even necessarily mean you get an invitation. Good luck to him, but I wouldn't get my hopes up... |

12/14/2009 8:53:57 AM Yes, I agree with colq1223 and peteg512, longer and tougher courses are in order... Plus scratch won't be good enough for the Masters. He needs to be at least a +5 handicap... |

12/14/2009 8:32:44 AM To from a 22 handicap to Scratch in two years is unheard of. I agree with Sylla maybe in 10 years, and he must play tougher courses to see any real improvements. |

12/13/2009 9:00:30 PM i dont think the masters course is going to be any shorter than 6800 yds either. he plays on a course that barely reaches 6000 yds. |

12/12/2009 6:54:39 PM He needs to have talent and ability otherwise he would just reach a 3 or 4 handicap |

12/12/2009 9:42:56 AM greenjacket, 22 handicap. sounds like me. i wish i could practice several times a week. that is alot to learn in such a short time. i suspect if he gets free or donated lessons he could drop his handicap pretty quick but to be able to compete mentally in the Masters, he is more delusional than i am |
