Up Through the Slot!
Posted by Goynes42 1/11/2010 11:30:41 PM

Happy New Year! It's been a while since I've written one of my instructional blogs, but I'd like to start off the year with a little backswing thought that should help you with one of the most common problems with many amateurs--that is, the closed clubface at the top of the swing. Some pros have made great livings playing with a closed face at the top (Trevino, Duval, Z. Johnson, etc.), but they know exactly how to handle it. For most amateurs, it's a disaster waiting to happen (believe me, I struggled with one for years).

Oakmont Country Club, Corinth TX -- A Walk-through!
Posted by Goynes42 7/15/2009 6:33:12 PM

When I was young, I had a book called Great Golf Courses of the World. It had nice (for the time) photography, and each course's multi-page description included a hole-by-hole walkthrough. I thought it was pretty cool, so I decided to write one here of my home club, Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, TX. No, it's not the "real" Oakmont, but it's a nice and often challenging track, designed by Roger Packard and Don January, opened in 1986 (I think). So if you're bored at work and want a diversion, have a good read! And hey, if you ever happen to play out here, you'll have an idea of what to expect!

Putting -- Hold Your Finish for Better Putts!
Posted by Goynes42 7/1/2009 2:27:47 PM

If you ever have had a day where the par saves just wouldn't fall and two-putts seemed like a long-shot proposition, you might be suffering from a problem that many, many golfers have--that is, coming out of your stroke too soon after impact!

More Loft = More Fairways!
Posted by Goynes42 6/15/2009 1:47:59 PM

I just wanted to write quickly about a topic that many of us think about from time to time--that is, driver loft. Many golfers out there don't really realize how much it can affect their accuracy--much more so than their length off the tee.

How to Make a Good Release!
Posted by Goynes42 4/27/2009 1:34:05 PM

Developing a good release is crucial to the development of a good swing. A good release will give you great power and accuracy with less effort, and a poor one will do exactly the opposite. If you hit a huge slice, or can't find distance even if you swing out of your socks, chances are you are not releasing the club correctly.

The Importance of a Full Shoulder Turn
Posted by Goynes42 4/6/2009 1:16:48 PM

I feel that making a complete shoulder turn is one of the most important fundamentals in the golf swing. I think between having a good grip, a smooth tempo and a full shoulder turn, you can really play solid golf--and that's without thinking about "swing positions" or anything else!

Tempo, Tempo, Tempo!
Posted by Goynes42 2/24/2009 6:09:59 PM

Have you ever had a day where you just didn't have any clue whatsoever where the ball was going once it left the clubface? I would be willing to bet that a large part of that had to do with your tempo.

How to Play Fairway Woods!

I'm back! I've been busy teaching since the new semester started, and my wife and I are getting ready to buy a house, so I haven't had much time to write new blogs, let alone practice or play. But here we go!

Leave an Uphill Putt!
Posted by Goynes42 1/14/2009 8:37:13 AM

On most good courses, there are pin locations such that you WILL 3-putt if you leave your ball in the wrong spot on the green...and there are also spots on the green relative to that pin that will give you a reasonable one-putt chance.

Controlling Ball Flight!
Posted by Goynes42 12/21/2008 11:45:13 PM

There are so many personal ways to control the flight of the golf ball, as evidenced by the great number of classic players who all had different swings. There's no one correct way to do it, at least in my book. But if you are struggling with that slice, hook, or whatever, here are some basic things to know about what the club does to the ball's flight, no matter what you swing like.

Develop a Putting Stroke!
Posted by Goynes42 12/4/2008 1:21:57 AM

In my experience playing with friends and acquaintances, most people just putt the ball with little specific thought as to how. But being aware of your putting stroke can mean the difference between having a great scoring day or an awful one.
