Looks like the site now charges $14.95 for USGA handicaps, still much cheaper than the $30 CDGA charges.

It's that time of year again. I made a call to the Rule Ranger and she has decided that we need a refresher on some of the finer points of our golfing game. Pay attention. She's serious! These rules are constantly broken and are affecting general sportsmanship, honesty, side bets, and skin pots.

    From the Tee:

If you suspect that you will not be able to find your ball or that it has landed out of bounds, you should play a provisional ball. Announce that it is provisional , tee it up, and then play until you reach the approximate position where you believe the original ball to be. If you can not locate your ball within 5 minutes (DiamondStrikers = 2 minutes) or it has landed out of bounds, the provisional ball becomes the ball in play with 1 penalty stroke.

If your ball has landed in a water hazard you do not have the option of playing a provisional ball.

    From the Fairway:

If your ball is lying out of bounds you only have one option - take a drop on the site of the last stroke under 1 penalty stroke. You may play a provisional ball. The provisional ball will be the ball in play under the penalty of 1 stroke.

If your ball is in a water hazard , you have two options:

    1. Without penalty, play the ball as it lies.

    2. With 1 penalty stroke, take a drop outside the water hazard depending on the color of the stakes:

    Yellow Stakes:

1.Take a drop on the backwards extension of the line from the hole to the entry point (entry point = the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. ***Not the side of where it landed but the exact point where it crossed going backwards away from the hole. Many of you misapply this rule). - 1 penalty stroke

    2. Take a drop on the site of the last stroke. - 1 penalty stroke

    Red Stakes:

With Red Stakes, you have the same option as the yellow stakes plus you may:

    1. Take a drop within 2 club lengths of the entry point. - 1 penalty stroke

    2. Take a drop within 2 club lengths of the point opposite the entry point (spot on the opposite side of the lateral water hazard at the same distance from the hole). - 1 penalty stroke

*** The only additional option is when a course provides a drop zone fo

There are a host of golf rules. Just like any other sport, it is important to learn, know, and apply the rules. The Rule Ranger will make another visit if necessary. For now, let's keep her happy.

Without a doubt, Reese won by shooting his best round of the year, 98. Notice that no money was on the line!

I've noticed that people are posting scores from last year. Handicap is based on scores on a rolling 12 months.
