An ESC Score sets a maximum per-hole score that you can turn in for handicap purposes.
Below are the rules for ESC:

Course Handicap (0-9), Max Hole Score: Double Bogey
Course Handicap (10-19), Max Hole Score: 7
Course Handicap (20-29), Max Hole Score: 8
Course Handicap (30-39), Max Hole Score: 9
Course Handicap (40+), Max Hole Score: 10
