I've been watching the Solhiem Cup closely. Couple of comments.
First, I wish the players would quit automatically looking to their opponent to concede a putt. It has become so automatic that Allison Lee committed a huge blunder by assuming, on a green, that her putt would be conceded and picked her ball up and didn't putt out. Naturally, Suzanne Pettersen immediately pointed out that the putt had NOT been conceded; loss of hole for the Americans. Quit looking to your opponent to "give" you something. Assume that you have to putt out every time and you won't have the issue. Second. The ladies need to learn to hit half-shots so that they can control their spin. Yesterday I watched player after player hit full-out shots with lofted clubs that created so much backspin that Greg Norman would have been proud of that spin rate. It was frustrating to see the Americans watch their opponent hit a full-out shot that lands next to the pin and the ball spins back 30 feet and then see the American player do the exact same thing. This happened repeatedly and at a time when the Americans needed to change the tone of their match. The Americans could easily have won some points I think had they been able to control their spin at a time when their opponent gave them an opening. Based on what I've seen so far, it doesn't look good for team USA but we'll see today. |

Somehow the Americans pulled it out. I wasn't able to watch any of it this week with the time difference and the fact I need to catch up on my sleep as much as possible being a college student on weekends. I'm kind of glad I didn't though because it just seems like this whole tournament was marred in controversy. Every time I went on Golf Channel there was some sort of tense event taking place. The same thing happened when I attended the event in Colorado 2 years ago with all the rules controversies.
This really has to be expected when you put 2 teams of about 15 women against each other with any sort of crystal (trophy, ring, coffee mug, etc.) on the line. They're going to freak the f out a couple of times, but it's kinda ridiculous. I watch golf to see good golf played and see who can best conquer a golf course, not to watch a soap opera. The Solheim Cup seems like the latter. I love the Ryder Cup more than any other event, and while spats happen there, with the War by the Shore coming to my mind most, it's not nearly as often. I'm glad the Americans have actually won a Cup against Europe again, because it's been a while between this, the Ryder, and the Walker, but more golf less controversy please. |

And have the common decency to stay by the green until your opponent holes out. What's with this walking across the green crap while someone is still putting???

What a comeback! I'll be honest. I didn't think the Americans had a snowball's chance of coming back from that deficit. But they played their hearts out and deserve to win. Kudos to Angela Stanford for handling Suzanne Pettersen, Kudos to Gerina Piller for making that crucial putt and kudos to Paula Creamer for shutting up the naysayers. Kudos to all the Americans for their fantastic win. Wow! That was exciting.

Silly me, I thought it was rude. It was rude and Karma prevailed on Pettersen. She will have a hard time recovering from that one. Laura Davies said it best. |

I haven't yet seen today's proceeding (on the DVR for later), but up to that point, there had been some incredible golf being played, from eagles on par 5, to near hole in ones on par 3, incredible bombs from over 60ft, great chipping (not all the time, but enough that I noticed how it was markedly better than the usual average LPGA chipping which is only so-so) and really good putting under pressure (and some stupid putts too, of course)... As you know, the game the women play resembles more the game that we play than the men on the PGA Tour, but this contest was largely at a different level. I couldn't have done anywhere as well as these ladies did on that course, on both teams. |
